StarCraft MMO Announcing Soon?

by Steve Gibson, May 05, 2007 5:46pm PDT

So the rumor mill has been going pretty wild lately and at least a couple different sources are pointing towards a StarCraft universe-based massively multiplayer game as the announcement coming soon in Korea. Blizzard has already confirmed that it plans to announce a new product on May 19th in Korea and it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to speculate that it is StarCraft-related given the venue. The Blizzard rep quote, in case you forgot:

"We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present."

In addition, CVG has been told by "well placed US sources" that a StarCraft MMO is in the works. So there you go, a StarCraft MMO may be coming soon. Or, as is more likely with Blizzard timetables, within the next 5 years.

  • oh... what if it's all of the above?
all this speculation (or hope) for StarCraft 2 or StarCraft Online/Galaxies/MMO/ MMOFPS

a StarCraft 2 RTS game with some FPS elements and then some Battle.net elements and some MMO/Battlefield/Planetside/or even quickie Unreal Tournament type elements? *boggles* like Supreme Commander, Savage, Hellgate: London all thrown together ? ah-hahahaha!

heh, prob'ly kinda impossible to make a good "Blizzard-class" game like that

an MMO RTS you play.. units/squads you send can be AI or player-controlled..
if player unit/squad dies, you take over an AI unit.. or wait 'til new unit(s) are created..
PVP could be like Battlegrounds (or capture the flag, UT Onslaught, and Assault)
    1v1 or n-vs.-n PVP/Arena deathmatch (although, i dunno how you'd play Zerg 1v1)
