The 8800GTS 320mb for only 260$ (after rebate) remains by far the best deal then for a video card at this time.
It is not worth paying 170 / 190 / 210 for some other card when for a few measly bucks more you can get the 8800GTS which frankly, obliterates them.
i told you so]s

This is easily one of the coolest shows around at the moment.
Sure, the acting is mixed (you know it's bad when they can't even hire decent ethnic actors - Mohinder, jesus fuck, he's terrible), that said Hiro and Ando are by far the best actors in the whole show, but this is more about the solid progression towards a climax without needless filler (hello lost!) with interesting characters in a very tense and exciting situation. Plus there are layers of mysteries and recurring details (the s-symbol thingo) that are actually going to mean something!
This episode just nailed that on so many levels, perfect build-up and execution, now your mind is left reeling they have Sylar - what will they do with him? Claire is going to reveal her powers to her father - will he reveal his secret? Peter 'annoying lip' Petrelli is going to jail - will his asshole brother step in or will the shadowy government agency? What exactly are the government up to - good or bad?
Very cool. Does it hold up til the end of the season?

Of course John Carmack loves the PC, he is probably a sloppy programmer himself...I personally don't think PC game programmers are going to be the best console programmers since console programmers probably write much tighter code and have tricks up their sleeves...just look at what some of the console games look like compared to PC games, I don't see PC doing the physics of MotorStorm or the graphics of Gears of War on most of their games...the only game that I have noticed that looks good is Crysis, which I bet could be done on a console with the right programmers...

I have a MCE machine. Today it stopped working entirely. It boots up fine and posts fine, but when it gets to the Windows portion of the bootup process, all I get is a blank screen, the monitor LED stays green, but no post/image nothing. I've tried reseating the videocard and memory, no workie.
Confuzzled, any suggestions or ideas as to what could be wrong?

Or, well, you don't have to click on that - After I heard/read the news about VT shootings, and I've been feeling very, very sorry for the victims all day.
Somehow I thought, of all the places, this would be my place of choice to wish condolences for the families with losses.
May you all rest in peace.

After a thoroughly embarassing near total failure on launch, I got it limping along enough last night for it to work, abeit slowly. I'll be working on performance and bringing back the graphs soon. Read the original thread for some laughs and some quite interesting statistics!

I've been looking forward to BioShock and all, but this is getting strange. After the big daddy starts making all those weird noises at me i wake up. The funny thing is i haven't been keeping up too much with this game. dahanese! bioshockers! help!
His starting point is that the penal system has too much influence, and that we have too many people in prison (and he means Norway, which has 0.06% of their population in prison. the US has 0.7%).
It's a really intriguing idea, where he submits that a society more based on primary relations than the impersonal connections based on the exchange of money would be one with less criminality. And that penalties, mostly in the form of imprisonment, being a means of causing harm, actually increases the total amount of misery in society. And since prison population and crime actually has very little correlation, he suggests that it's very possible to decrease prison populations without much effort or getting all philosophical about the meaning of crime.
His solutions are quite radical, in that he focuses on conflict resolution as much as possible, through contact between victim and perpetrator, negotiation, debate, councils and so on. He suggests that a system where we were more interested in finding the truth of events and moving forward as a society would be a greater good than the focus today on punishment. He compares to the truth-seeking commissions of post-apartheid South Africa, and how that might well be a healthier way to move on, than, for example, the Nürnberg trials.
He doesn't completely throw out imprisonment, though, as he admits that there are situations where reconciliation is impossible. He does envision a world of a minimalist penal system, however.
TL;DR Pretty good read, in these times of an increasingly hysterical media.
