Guinness to Publish Volume of Game-Centric World Records (Updated)
by Chris Faylor, Apr 12, 2007 8:11am PDTEarlier this week, Guinness World Records announced plans to focus a new entry in its popular line of books on the realm of video games. Among the myriad topics contained within, Guinness World Records - Videogame Edition 2008 will cover the high scores, fastest completion times, and sales figures of various video games, as well as reviews of the year's 20 biggest games. Further delving into gaming culture, it will also reveal the single highest score ever, the most successful game console of all time, and the income of several pro gamers. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, GI editor Ellie Gibson will be serving as official consultant on the volume. More details on the text are to be revealed during next week's London Book Fair, which runs April 16-18. "We reintroduced videogaming world records to our annual book a few years ago, and itÂ’s proved to be one of the most popular sections with our core readers. It makes sense, therefore, to dedicate an entire annual to the subject," explained Guinness World Records editor in chief Craig Glenday. "Our record researchers are already scouring the videogaming community for superlatives, and the vast number of games, gamers, developers and platforms mean that we have an incredible pool of content to dip into each year." Last year, Guinness declared Lara Croft as the "Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine." The 2007 edition of Guinness World Records included a four page spread focused on gaming, its topics ranging from the fastest Halo 2 speed run to the world's first pinball championship and the oldest known competitive gamer. Many of those facts were compiled with the help of Twin Galaxies, which publishes its own game-related record book, Twin Galaxies' Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records. Update: Guinness World Records - Videogame Edition 2008 will release in April 2008, a Guinness represetative told Shacknews. The target audience for this edition is "boys between 10 and 14 years old," with a secondary demographic of "14 to 44 year old males."

Developers are notoriously secrative about lots of things, especially concurrent users, so beating certain records (as an example Im thinking the Planetside most fps players on one server record) would be hard to do, especially as mmo developers very rarely release figures about subscribers, and when they do they are spin laden [lies]
