Blame Canada

Just spotted this bit from the ArsTechnica guys. Amazingly enough one of the songs from the SouthPark movie (Blame Canada) actually got nominated for an Oscar. Along with SouthPark were movies like Toy Story2, Tarzan, Magnolia, and Music of the Heart. Not really sure how they let that one slip into the mix, one can only imagine the acceptance speech from Trey Parker though :)

  • #66 - are you assuming that everyone who liked Fight Club is a bloodthirsty angst-ridden \'I hate my father\' teen? First off - Fight Club didn\'t have a singular \'message\' - or \'point\' - In an interview the author said the book didn\'t have any singular point, and was meant primarily as entertainment (though it certainly is thought provoking) and I doubt Fincher was trying to say any one think as well.

    *spoilers below*

Fight Club was so thought provoking because at the beginning the audience thinks the movie\'s message is just anti-establishment, anti-consumerist. I\'m sure lots of people bought into that, myself included - as Norton\'s character\'s life was just awful, we wanted to see that apartment full of IKEA crap burn. As the movie progresses though, you\'re just thinking \"HOLY FUCK!\" this Fight Club shit has gone way too far. It seems like the movie does a 360 in what it\'s trying to tell you. This is maybe where you get the idea Fight Club is making fun of it\'s audience. But think about it - Norton\'s guy\'s life still sucked ass before Fight Club, it\'s still apparent there\'s some value in anti-consumerism. The deal is - it\'s not trying to tell you anything (like say, American Beauty, which was cool anyway, but not nearly as interesting as Fight Club), it\'s trying to get you to think.

  • Satan was robbed! His \"Up There\" was the best song in the \"South Park\" movie. That, or \"What would Brian Boitano Do.\" Oh well. The Academy will never give South Park an Oscar, so Trey Parker needn\'t bother writing that speech.

Geekboy movies \"Fight Club\" and \"The Matrix\" got exactly the noms they deserved: technical stuff; anything else would have been a joke and a half.

PS - to everyone who raves about \"Fight Club.\" Are you aware that the movie is actually making fun of people like you?

    You\'re Welcome!

  • 51, yeah i read the book! It was quite good. I picked up another book by the author, Chuck Palahniuk, from the library called \"Survivor\" but I never got around to reading it. Watch for Fight Club to get more and more popular as people check it out on video. Its gonna be one of those cult hits. All my friends love it, its just not mainstream enough to gain huge box-office draws. People at first are drawn to Brad Pitt and Ed Norton (who OWNS) but then they\'re scared away by the violence and storyline. Rosie O\'Donnell for example. She hated it. Clueless, fat bitch.

\"You are not your job. You are not the money in your bank account. You are not the car you drive. You are not how much money is in your wallet. You are not your fucking khakis. You are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.\"

  • Actually this made it on the news here in Canada tonight. It seems our socialist politicians (nearly all of them) don\'t like the song and were bashing it on the CBC news (which is funded by the government). I personally thought it was funny but apparently I\'m the minority.

Pretty weird that they would get angry at this song though of all things.
Best quote from the newscast was

\"And at the rate things are going Canada will be getting blamed for many of America\'s problems in the next few years\".

..ok well I guess you had to be there....

    Thanks!

  • FYI, matrix and fight club were both nominated for an award or two. complete and utter shite awards (not best picture or anything) but they got nominated for something nonetheless. Like editing, sound, and special effects or something. throwaway awards.

I think Fight Club was the 38th highet grossing flick this year. Not terrible, not great, but certainly less than what was expected from their huuuggee marketing campaign. Oh well, watch for it to be a huge hit on video. I know it\'ll be the first movie i actually go out and purchase in years....

\"I haven\'t been fucked like that since grade school!\"

    Fucking classic flick...
