Lord of the Rings Online Goes Online for Free
by Chris Remo, Apr 06, 2007 2:14pm PDTTurbine's upcoming massively multiplayer game The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar began its World Tour open beta program today. Prospective players may download and play the game for free, from now until the official launch date of April 24. Characters in the World Tour beta will be capped at level 15, though they can be rolled over into the full game when the beta ends if the player has preordered. Turbine expects approximately a million players to participate in the free program. When the Midway-published MMO is fully released, it will have a monthly subscription rate of $14.99. Those who have preordered the game will receive bonus in-game items and will have access to two pricing tiers: a monthly fee of $9.99, or the unusual option of purchasing a lifetime membership for $199.99.

I wish somebody would come up with a new formula, but I've got no ideas to contribute. The entire genre seems in a rut.

I thought I would try out the beta. Had to register on myaccount.turbine.com. Which must have the most inane, stupid and unfriendly registering process imaginable?!
There are just SO many things which are wrong with the whole forme and page setup.
Like having to retype passwords (actually two sets of passwords) for every time you try to find a nickname/accountname which is not taken. Strange error codes instead of messages and a whole lot more.
I mean... Come on!!
How can they possible make a good game, when a they make the process of registering for an account, actually hard to accomplish?

LOTRO is a very decent MMO too, it isn't probably going to be the most remembered MMO for originality. But everything is done well and the game world is immersive and feels big once you get past the first area.
