I hope PvP in this game will be based on skill, rather than on how much time one invests in getting good equipment for one's avatar.

from what ive read, it sounds like it will be based heavily on skill. mythic knows what happened to DAoC after the gear-related expansions, and i dont think they will fuck up again.

It's still up in the air.

They keep saying it's not going to be gear-bound, and everyone begs that it's not gear bound. Then they say something stupid like, "As players advance in the game they will be rewarded with new powerful items that give them advantages in combat."

So, it's tough to say what direction they are going.

The pessimists see it as WoW with a whole bunch of battlegrounds instead of just 3.

i dont have a problem with progressively better gear as long as it doesnt require a huge time sink to get.

the issue with DAoC (when trials of atlantis came out) and WoW (up till BC) was that it took forever to get good gear, but once you got it you had the huge upper hand. Hours of raiding in WoW, waiting for super rare mobs in DAoC, master level quests, etc...

if its something that is rewarded as you progress by level, or requires a marginal amount of extra effort than i am all for it. the problem is that obviously the hardcore players wont be happy with that.

DAoC was my first experience with stuff like that. guild would do weekly ML dungeon runs. i think i did ML3 first, the dungeon was awesome and set up really well (i still hold that the daoc ML instances are better then wow raids), but fuck it took like 6.5 hours for the whole thing.

Yeah, I've only done one raid in WoW and swore to never do that again. Five hours in Zul something, wiped at least 3 times and didn't have anything to show for it. At least it was pretty fun getting to 60 though. :(

I don't mind if it takes AGES, it's just annoying when it's exclusive to huge raids so the only way you can get the gear is if you get involved with guilds and then the game becomes more about organization of people rather than the game.

I don't want to have to schedule my play time according to other people, I prefer to be able to pick up and play when I want too.

true. i like how they did the epic quests for people in daoc. each class had their own epic quest line for epic gear (which was good, but not as good as ToA gear). some quests could be done alone, and others needed a small group of people.

Might it be something like Asheron's Call? =D

If so, I would just start drooling right now. Now that was a game which combined character skill + equipment with player skills.

I feel this is stupid to even discuss... of corse the players that spend the most time playing will have the best gear and better pvp skills... thats just hows games ware u level up work.

Well... They did not in as far as I remember in UO, and in Asheron's Call it mattered only as much that on level 40 would have a hard time killing a level 120, but a level 70 played by a skilled player could easily beat a level 120+ equipped with great gear.
