Source Communications Update Coming

The latest Steam news update is now available, noting a few things including a communications update that's coming for the Source Engine.

We'll be releasing an update soon to both text chat and voice communication in the Source Engine that will improve communication for people in multiplayer games. We've completely rebuilt the text chat system, adding the ability to browse your chat history right in the chat window and a filter to remove messages that clutter your game screen. Voice communication will be getting a huge boost in quality, so if you have a microphone sitting on the corner of your desk collecting dust, now would be a good time to plug it back in.

I hope they have an ignore/mute function like in Diablo II's in-game chat where you can make it so only a selected few can read your text and you can ignore all incoming messages from the rest of the players.

Voice chat was better in Half-Life 1 because the server admin could use what codec he wanted for voice chat. Most people chose the best codec that was freely available compared to the one that came with HL 1. You couldn't do the same with HL 2. You had to use their codec and couldn't use the best publicly available one. Because of that, HL 2's voice communication was a lot worse than it was in HL 1.

I was upset that Microsoft ditched GameVoice to send that team over to do the original XBOX chat stuff -- I've used GV for years (and still do). It sounds and works better than any other VOIP software/hardware made. I just hope it still works in Vista.

On the other hand, I'm not upset that MS put those guys on the XBOX stuff, because the XBOX Live chat works flawlessly -- although the quality is about half that of the PC version.

Over the years I've tried all the VOIP apps and GameVoice crushed them all time and time again.

Fuck yeah.
This is another sign that the whole wave of Xbox live is pretty much takings its turn to shape things for the time being. A lot of what live does isn't new, it just makes it easy. The amount of fun Ive had playing co op crackdown the last few nights is insane, having a friend to laugh with while we play is a big part of that.
Of course, there's the whole "blowing shit up never gets old" thing too.
