First Post!
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 20, 2007 6:24am PSTSo Supreme Commander launches today, and I will be passing on it. The demo just didn't do it for me at all. But many of you seem to be looking forward to it, so hopefully the retail version does entertain. The Command & Conquer 3 demo is due out soon, I have high hopes for that one. Movie: One of us had to die. With me, it tends to be the other guy.

It's better to be medium-good in a great field than great in a medium field. There are some fields where a lot of money can be made, and real estate development is one of them.
Law is another one, at private firms. Medicine -- if you're a surgeon -- is another, and finance is the highest-paid one. Starting a restaurant isn't a moneymaking field. Teaching and writing, except in the rarest of cases, aren't either. Acting is almost never highly paid, and police work never is highly paid.
Please notice a pattern: the most interesting and psychologically rewarding work is rarely the best-paid. So choices must be made.
Not very encouraging!

I say work on your friendships because a difference in salary of $100k a year isn't going to help when you shoot yourself in the face before you turn 35 because you went to work at some job that you didn't give a fuck about.
Sure, save, invest, plan, blah, blah, but money for being used. You exchange it for goods and services. It doesn't make you awesome by itself.

After 6 years with this current comp (athlon 1.33, geforce 3) I went out today and bought a new one. Asus p5b deluxe motherboard and core 2 duo. I don't even know why I bought it, haha I never play games anymore.. but that may have been b/c I couldn't run any of the new games... Now I can... weeeeeeee.
I can't belive this Geforce 3 lasted 6 years... it was a Power Color, the cheapest I could find at the time, the heatsink fan died 2 years ago but I bought a big cpu fan and drilled it onto the heatsink... no problems ever since.
I am going to install this stuff in a bit, I hope I'm back soon...

I <3 shackers
For almost all of my trips and travels, I have just looked up random shackers in the area and met up with them. I've even based some of my travels solely on shackers being in an area and it's been amazingly worth it. I may not have even talked or really chatted much with them before hand, but we always talk on some random subject and have a great time. My travels would never have been as fun alone. So specifically for the last week, I would like to thank:
-peetabix01 Thank you for the beer and good times. The train made it fine to Malmo and I just slept there! I have pictures of us together, but none of that 20 or maybe 40 year old chick
-timm lol you will never read this :( Totally awesome dude who let me crash on his couch of Valentines Day, which I didn't even remember was going on. He still has my WE from 2 years ago! http://priv.asktherelic.com/we2005.jpg Also, never leave the shack or I will find out where you live and come annoy you.
-d fluke Dude, thanks for a great dinner! I got into the hostel fine and left in the morning, I'm pissed the schedule was wrong, but whatever. It was great to meet you!
-aavenr Play your damn XBOX360 or I will come steal it and play on it! Thanks for letting me crash on your couch, great times that night.
-woddemandred <3 the Arian race haha, it was great to meet you and hear some good stories. I think I will check out some of that anime you talked about.
-AbortedFetusChristi OMG this dude gives the best advice ever! Cologne's Carnival was an amazing time and I got so drunk, perfect way to remember Germany.
So this is a big thank you to Steve, Maarten, and everyone else mentioned. The Shack is a great community and my life would not as good or as fun had I not met so many awesome people here. Thanks!

How do you guys deal with this sort of situation? Beer and Pizza? I might do it as a favour in the bank sort of thing (he owes me one, in a manly fashion) but this guy doesn't have any skills or connections that I might need.

In celebration of National Pancake Day, IHOP is giving away shortstacks in all of their restaurants from 7am to 10pm today.
All they ask in return is for you to make a small donation to the Children's Miracle Network charity that they sponsor.

Lately I've been thinking quite a bit about a possible future as a researcher/professor. However, much of what I would be accomplishing is basic research with no apparent application in the bigger picture.
It's caused a bit of upset within myself, only because I wonder if I should feel more obligation to have a career that directly changes/helps the world. Shit never seems to be getting better, and I disagree with the way things seem to be/the direction they're going in... but does it not hold true that if one is not part of the solution they are simply part of the problem?
This leads me to the question of what job could one take up that would in fact make a change or difference? Or is making a change in the world something one does as an aside to their career? More specifically, should one's career be devoted to a cause, or should one be devoted to a cause in their free time?
I feel an obligation to future generations to at least try to do something positive with my potential, but I'm unsure of the best means/most balanced manner of accomplishing that. Is there even such a thing?

Tonight's band of the night is Subtle
They're a new group to just pop onto the scene in the last few years, but combine some really disparate different trends in the far left of the music scene, while still making it not only digestible but easily enjoyable.
Their style is like taking underground hip-hop and introducing it to dance punk and then tossing them in a blender with a stream-of-consciousness author. And then Mike Patton drinks it.
Really strange, really good.
Here's one of their more mainstream sounding songs

Here's one that's definitely more hip-hop roots off their older album

Here's a live recording that's really good

Flash game. The controls are really simple. Use the cursor keys to navigate a dot though a maze. Makes me feel like a sperm when I play it.

You are awesome. For $300 it was taken off my record. No jacked-up insurance to deal with. I'd send you a crate of fine liquors but I can't remember your name. :(

I gotta get passed the phone interview, but I'm fairly prepped for it this time around. My question IS, do any of you work on the Xaml/WPF/E, adcenter, or CellPhone-embedded devices teams? whaddya think of them? My top choice is WPF/E, but who knows how this is going to play out. I need to have 2-3 choices to push for though at teh next stage, and I know WPF/E is the top one based on my experience, but I was wondering how people felt about some of the others. I've tracked XAML development at MS for around 2 years on and off, and ive done a ton of AJAX and C#, so its a very natural fit. (btw, there is a new CTP browser plugin for all major browsers that allows for some amazing xaml content to be viewed, try it out!)

If you have a preference, was it influenced by the age you were when you first viewed either of them?
For the older shackers that saw Star Trek first and liked it, what was your opinion of StarWars when it premiered compared to the young kids that grew up with Ep. 1-3 and the next gen/DS:9/Voy series?

ok right now I am passing variables to the script via the url e.g:
www.blah.com/index.php?page=2
but when I look at sites like digg.com (which uses php iirc), it's much cleaner:
www.digg.com/page2/
Is there any way that I can get clean urls like this?

I think I'm pretty much set on getting a 1080p display, say an LCD around 40 inches. I'd like to keep it close to $1000, so do I head directly to the 37" Westinghouse (LVM-37w3) and not look back? On amazon they're just under $1100, though obviously I'd check other places on price.
I could get the 42" for like $250 more which may be worth it for such a high resolution set. This thing would be going in the living room of a small apartment with viewers' eyes 7-8 feet away(actual measured distance), which can easily use the screen space. Likewise costco's site had I believe a Sceptre 42" 1080p LCD for $1200 or something, but it looks like it's gone. I know for yet a few hundred more I could start getting into low end SXRDs and some large sub-2K DLPs. I'm not sure I want a bigass TV like that though, and just spending 1000-1300 is already pushing it.
Any suggestions or feedback from owners? I have yet to do the required scouring of the necessary avsforums threads, go wander around any stores I can find selling them, etc, but I think the westinghouses have pretty good reputations as cheap LCDs go.
