3dfx At CeBIT

Seems 3dfx is finally showing the Voodoo 4 and 5 in Germany later this month (Thanks Björn's 3D World). February 24 to March 1 the annual CeBIT in Hannover, Germany will be held again and 3dfx will be demonstrating the Voodoo4 4500, Voodoo5 5000 and Voodoo5 5500. Lara Croft will be there to promote it. Lara is currently played by Dutch hottie Lara Weller. 3dfx has also announced that those three cards will be out this spring, but there's no mention of the Voodoo5 6000.

Duh. Obviously the V5 (not V4) will rip the GeForce a new one. It had better, its a generation newer. The V5 wont be competing with the Geforce though (at least not for very long). And, yes, in my mind the only real thing the V5 has going against it is 3dfx\'s opengl driver. Lack of hardware T&L isnt great, but probably not a big deal if you\'re going to upgrade again in 9-12 months anyways.

    I\'m definitely curious. I want Q3A 1024x768x32 at a steady 60 fps. Whose gonna give me that? NV15 or V5 5500?

  • Thats my only fear with going back to 3dfx too. Back in the day of the minigl (v1/v2) they were fine, but I havent heard very much praise for 3dfx\'s gl icd. Nvidias drivers arent perfect but in the games/consumer market theyre tops.

Oh well, I\'ll be ready to upgrade this spring. It\'ll be interesting to see how this plays out between nvidia and 3dfx. The DDR ram that the geforce depends on has juuuust engough bandwidth for the current geforce clock speed/fillrate. If the clock gets upped to 166-175 mhz they are going to need some wicked fast memory or a wider memory interface or else its going to be sdr all over again.

  • I bought a geforce DDR in December and let me say that I am extremely happy with the card now. Any game I play, except for glide only run great. On top of that each new driver seems to get me a 1-2 fps increase in Q3.

I really dislike 3dfx now, not because their cards are suckier. In fact they are not, and Im sure the v5, and v6 will rip the geforce a new one...well so they say, but in terms of quality and consumer service they are very horrible. For instance, for the past 6 months before I got the geforce, I had to rely on those 3rd party opengl drivers to actually play quake 3 worth a damn. I heard 3dfx just finally got on the ball and thats too late for me. Thats why I wont run out and buy any 3dfx products for quite some time.

Anyway, if you want your new voodoo card, enjoy it, I just enjoy having what the v4/v5 promises...right now :-)

-3dfx NDA hardware roadmap - THE NEW GENERATION!!
-Detailed Rampage and Sage specifications and hardware overview
-New Generation graphics programming techniques on shadows, lighting, and non-photorealist rendering
-In addition, roundtable discussions will be available for face-to-face meetings with 3dfx engineers, for detailed discussions on D3D, OpenGL, Higher Order Surfaces, shadows, and non-photorealistic rendering

I\'m intrigued! The Rampage/Sage info had better not be NDA. =|
