The Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 demo has been downloaded and will be checked out shortly. The original game was one of my 2006 favorites (it's pretty much a toss-up between that and Oblivion), and I'm kind of worried about the fact that the sequel is coming out so soon after. Hopefully the Ubisoft team has managed to create a worthy followup. Also on FileShack

  • I played through as much as I could of the GRAW 2 demo (my 360 replacement is having issues displaying black smears and random tears on screen, so I'm waiting for the shipping box :S). The graphics have been improved, with nice real time lighting and much better particle effects. The AI seems hit and miss like before, with enemies seeing you at long distances or rushing you at times. The interface has been redone, with weapon switching and equipment being a lot easier to navigate and choose. The demo doesn't give too much time with your squad but enough time to see the new additions like being able to switch to their views.

The cover system isn't too bad, and its a lot easier to get in and out of cover than before. However, after playing Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas, it seems like a step back. Weird, since Ubisoft did a good job with Vegas' cover system, although I'm sure it was a different studio working on it. The tactical map and the drone are much more versatile in scoping out the battlefield, which lends the game more strategy than the first game. Having the Mule around also adds some extra depth. The game really isn't that much of an advancement from GRAW, other than refining it and adding new features that makes the game more strategic and in-depth. From what I've seen from movies released the missions look like they will have much more variety than in the original, so hopefully the SP campaign will have a good story coupled with great missions. I would rather have GRAW 2 a year after with these new improvements, then have the same game in 2 years and be outdated by then. I hope the inevitable GRAW 3 is a new game, with the strategic depth that has been missing since the series was born on the PC.

Multiplayer hasn't been discussed too much and the demo doesn't include it, so hopefully we'll hear of some really nice modes to make this game worth it. Overall it is definitely worth a download. As a purchase I would wait on what multiplayer will offer and reviews to ensure that the campaign missions hold up for the price of admission.
