Happy New Year everyone! Movie: At fifty dollars an hour, all my cases are interesting.

  • Been having a lot of fun with Heroes 5 lately

I had mixed feelings about it on launch, but a few patches (which have been regular, and significant) and the expansion helped a lot for fixing the quirks that bothered me about it

Beyond that however, an incredible 250 page full color and highly detailed fan manual is what pushed it from 'pretty but ok' to 'a heck of a lot of fun'

The hero skill system is entirely haphazard unless you know how it works, as are many other aspects of the game, but once they're exposed (in a manual that should have been with the game in the first place), it's much more enjoyable to play

Grab them here (in any language you care to read :P)

The latest patch is 1.4 (or 2.0 for the expansion), which has a very annoying bug with the Inferno town (dying gated stacks and occasionally the Mark of the Damned can cause crashes), so be aware of that if you're trying to tackle the single player campaign. You can revert to 1.3 to get past that part easily enough.

1.5/2.1 (expansion) is due sometime this month, with yet more improvements. They may be adding customization to duel mode, which lets you pick heroes and just have a tactical battle (quite a lot of fun actually, and they added 3x3 mode, which lets you pick three armies and swap them as they are defeated)

I still have a few issues with the game, but the hero skill system and tactical combat are just flatly superior to the other heroes games (and a lot of other similar tbs games as well). Plus, the graphics are beautiful and the music is as nice as always (same composers!). With the release of the map editor, there are now new maps being created for it regularly, and with the expansion at least, plenty of scenarios as well as a massive number of campaign maps.
