It's December 31st, and that means it's time to tally all the votes and present to you the Shacknews Game of the Year 2006 winners, as voted on by our audience. As we switched voting formats this year, results are based on total points per category in which a game was awarded 3 points for a first place vote, 2 points for a second place vote and 1 for a third place vote. We feel this allowed for readers to represent a broader cross-section of their personal taste and favorite game experiences from throughout the year. Without further ado...

Wii Sports should have been nominated for (and won) Game of the Year. C'mon people, have you SEEN the Wii section at EB Games, GameStop, Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Game Crazy, Best Buy, Circuit City, or anywhere else selling them? Everything is EMPTY, Gone, sold OUT. Even the Wii points cards, cheezy slip-on wiimote covers, carrying cases.. People went CRAZY over this system - It will be interesting to see _final_ Q4 results for Nintendo after all of December is added in.
I had a group of 30-50something year olds from my wife's office over for a holiday gathering about a week before Christmas, and all of them - never having touched a console together - could NOT be pried away from Wii Boxing, Tennis or Bowling.
Is Wii Sports for "H4rdc0r3 G4m3rzZ" ? Nope. But man, according to the sales reports so far, it's responsible for the Wii crushing XB360 and PS3. That and Zelda's oustanding 60%+ attach rate..

Oblivion had two quest lines (thief and dark brotherhood) that were a lot of fun but I had to quit after that because the game was so soulless. No interesting characters, no story worth caring about. The game was too meandering; it was more like a playground than a ride.
FFXII was a great technical achievement even if it doesn't look as pretty as Gears of War or Oblivion. It didn't have the fun factor of Zelda or Okami, though. Okami did really well too, as it deserves.
HL2: Ep1 should've been GOTY. It had the full package. Great in all aspects and a lot of fun to boot.
