The latest Valve news update is now available through Steam, noting the recent 20 hours of downtime and mentioning "We learned a lot and are taking steps to make sure that when the next storm like this hits our area 15-20 years from now *fingers crossed*, people will still be playing games on Steam while we are buying flashlight batteries." The update also notes holiday discounts for various games on Steam.

So we are gonna get a true "offline" mode now? Here's hoping it's flexible enough to accomadate Steam just going offline temporarly all the way to Steam shutting down permenently.

meh... it just means valve is going/or has cloned its data center in some deep underground hell hole that is hardwired to every backbone in the world...

      and so SKYNET is born...

That's what I'm asking myself too. I hope they make the offline mode actually work, and obviously secure a second authentication datacenter.

I just right click on "Local Area Connection" > Disable to get "true" offline mode ;-)

Yep, that works nicely... Same as disconnecting your network cable from the computer and then starting Steam. Works every time going into offline mode for Steam.

If Steam sees an active connection it's going to try and connect even if the content/auth servers are down. So just disable your network if you want to play that badly.

Right, it doesn't. You know, I'm getting pretty frustrated by people claiming it does.

Like I said before, it only works if you do that right after connecting successfully. If you try to connect and the Steam network is down, it not only won't work, but will never work anymore unless you have a backup of an obscure file, restore it, and then try to log with your network cable down.

Okey, Shack, this is for you.

It's a bit crap and you'll probably have to pause to read the text properly, but I think it's a better way of showing what I mean: that offline mode is busted.

This was recorded the day Steam was offline.

      Yes, I also want this.

I have lots of steam games that I like to play, and this outage pissed me off.
