Halo Footage & Interview

by Steve Gibson, Feb 07, 2000 5:21pm PST

InciteGames just sent word to Maarten of a huge 46meg video with footage of Halo from Bungie. It's pretty hefty so I tried to take  a few snapshots for the modem guys out there (and failed miserably), if someone wants to send me a few snaps I'll post them here and add to the Halo screenshot index. Here's the description:

This movie is straight from our CD and features an Doug Zartman interview/commentary and more in-game Halo footage than you have ever seen,EVER!.

  • There are other reasons to be excited about Halo besides graphics I\'ll list them.

    1. Plot line: What we\'ve seen so far about Halo\'s backstory looks fascinating. and the one character we know of (cortana) fascinates me.

    2. Team based Gameplay: Let me quote the Incite preview to explain how this is different than the balancing of classes in TF. \"For example, the person best at driving games
should get behind the wheel of the jeep, while another person should
    man the mounted machine gun.

Halo\'s weapons are another indicator of the need for teamwork. For
example, the rocket launcher is tough to aim and takes a long time to
reload. But a teammate armed with a laser-sighted handgun can
sneak up and do the aiming for you.\"

    3. Third Person View: That\'s right, IMO it\'s an advantage. IMO FPperspective is getting stale. If Halo uses a kind of CCIP (constantly computed impact point) most aiming considerations would be solved. Camera control will still need to be worked out though.

    4. Physics: One of the reason the game looks so amazing is because it has such amazing physics. In the final game we can expect game play advances to utilize these physics.

    6. Track record: Bungie hasn\'t created a bad game. Every game has pushed Gameplay in some manner. Don\'t believe me try Pathways into darkness, thier third game. It is so far ahead of it\'s time, It\'s the first FPS/RPG crossbreed.

Another promising area is mod support but all we\'ve heard from Jason Jones is that they plan letting users edit far more than their previous games. All around I know that I\'m pretty damn excited. I just wish that Bungie would have waited to announce it so Oni would still be the game I\'m most excited about.

  • What separates this from other shooters out there? (don\'t mention graphics) Is there some kind of cool plot or story or depth to gameplay? Am I just running around through pretty scenery shooting at aliens? I want some cold, hard facts on the gameplay here. So far, it looks like a mixture of Quake and Tribes with a fruity thirdperson camera thrown in. Bungie is a good company. Their games have been cool in the past, but that means nothing when we\'re talking about Halo. Track records mean nothing. I\'m sure lots of you , for whatever reason, don\'t like Quake 3 very much. Id had a great track record. (they still do in my mind) I need more than physics, \"crouching animations\" and \"fast rockets\" to have fun. Theres a little thing called gameplay. Sorry.

Note: I\'m not pro or con Halo. If its cool, I\'ll buy it. So far, I see lots of hype and pretty pictures, but I\'ve heard next to nothing on the actual game. Enlighten me.

  • #89, read post #59 again.

By the way, just because the game ran well in the movie, doesn\'t mean it will run well on your machine.

You know that was the one thing I was thinking watching the movie. Performance. Apparently these demos are done on 400mhz G3\'s/Rage128s and P2 450/TNT2U\'s. I have a tough time believing that machines of those specs are going to run this game in 800x600x32 and higher at more than 30 fps when there is a fair amount of onscreen action occuring. This thing is going to be a hardware whore just as much as Q3A is, if not more.

  • You\'re creaming yourselves over what is at this point a tech demo; why not try waiting for the game to actually come out before heaping praise on it? Or is it just more trendy to say \"that\'s gonna kick ass!\" because that what everyone else is saying? Keep in mind that they haven\'t seen any more than you.

Excessive hype can kill any project, because the buildup is so huge, people are expecting some sort of miracle after being fed bucket loads of hype and screenshots, and \"exclusive\" previews. When they don\'t get it, they get mad. How many people here who are raving over \'Halo\' will be saying it sucks when it finally comes out?

By the way, just because the game ran well in the movie, doesn\'t mean it will run well on your machine.

  • Graphics of this game are purty, no doubt. I think gameplay-wise, TF2 looks more interesting so far. Tribes2, which is more of the same Tribes gameplay we know and love, should be fun too. Bungie is cool, but I really want to hear A LOT more about the gameplay of this one before I get all excited. The graphics are nice, yes, but gameplay is still in up in the air. Track record or not, this game needs a solid theme, and it needs to be more than eye candy. Sorry, but third person looks a little ungainly too. Watch the part where you\'re following behind that plane-thingy. It looks kinda whack. Like, the view hops around spaztically, and for a second I thought it was some sort of spectator view..but I\'m pretty sure it was a chasecam thirdperson view. Me no like. And, no, Johnny Rotten, I don\'t want QuakeX necessarily.

What was with the weap switch animations? Even Quake 3\'s weapon change anim is smoother. With all the work they clearly put into rendering and animating their characters, its a shame the switching anim sucks cock. The reload animation sure is nifty though.

/me is gonna keep his expectations for this game in check.

(why the fuck is there Aphex Twin music on a commercial for the Special Olympics?)
