First Post!
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 08, 2006 7:11am PSTLast day in New York. Seeing a few more things, and then I'll be flying out tonight. Must also not forget to pick up Gears of War, as it is region free. It will save me like a week of waiting to play what looks to be this year's GOTY. Also on FileShack
- Arthur and the Minimoys demo - three level demo of this movie based game.
- Horse Racing Manager 2 demo - exciting!

Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update
Demon's Souls servers extended again
So I picked up GOW today, and it made me realize that the crappy tin can sound coming from my tv just doesn't cut it. I don't have the cash on hand to spring for speakers or a receiver to plug headphones into, so here is my question:
I have an XBOX 360, a nice SONY 36 inch HD tube tv with like 7 sets of inputs, and a decent set of corded headphones. With this setup alone (and no receiver) is it possible to get sound coming from the 360 in some way to the headphones? Can I buy a connector or something from The Source?
Any help please! I would love to be able to use headphones for GOW.

We're having some difficulty running NWN2 on my gf's machine. =( I'm running it fine on my system, and she's having a strange issue where the game runs smoothly and fine, but everything slowly gets out of sync. The trees and character animations begin to speed up to unbelievably fast speeds, and eventually the game locks up. Has anyone else seen this issue? We've tried new ATI drivers, a windows hotfix which supposedly fixes some dual-core issues, and an AMD driver that helped a little( it made the characters not teleport around - but that was about it ).
Here are the system specs for the machine that is busted:
AMD 4200+ X2
ATI 1900xtx 512mb
2Gb DDR2 Ram
Windows XP Pro 32bit
Here are the system specs the machine that works:
AMD 4600+ X2
Nvidia 7600 GT 256mb
2Gb DDR2 Ram
Windows XP Pro 32bit
The only thing we can figure is that maybe there is an incompatibility issue with the graphics card seeing as it is relatively newer.

Hello everyone! We’re pretty excited for episode 11 for we’ve got a new segment for you!
We’re here to talk about Penny Arcades Holiday charity drive “Child Play“, EA reveals several games that are schedules to be released within the next year (some might surprise you, but maybe not), we talk about how to get your girlfriend into video games
(according to a little Men’s Health article Elizabeth found)?
Elizabeth has a new Gadgetry for you, Chris introduces a new “Microtransaction Market Watch†segment to the show, and we talk about, of course, what we’re currently playing.
There is a ton of quality, entertaining rambling going on in here guys. Check it!
If you have any comments or questions, drop in the forums: http://www.playedpodcast.com/forum
Enjoy!

What do I do with my pussy situation?
Now that attention is gained, my gf and I picked up a kitten on the way home from the club one night. He's checked out, fine, etc etc but is at times... well, a kitten. The worst issue is that he _really_ loves to get out and since my gf hasn't owned a cat before I don't think she's really accustomed to the ability of cats to egress in a rapid manner. Apparently he got out 3x today, and now she's ready to just let him run amok next time. I have concerns about this, I mean we live in a fairly big city, in a rather high-traffic area. I forsee squished pet. I dislike squished pet. We keep a spray bottle with water around and it works for somethings but this isn't so easy.
Suggestions?

Note that Shaq is more than just a symbolic "honorary" officer. He was given a sidearm. He's an actual reserve officer, despite not living -- nor having ever lived -- anywhere near the area.

There is a single, central town (think diablo 1) and you basically leave it to enter dungeon "instances" to fight. This contrasts sharply against the big, roamable world of SoM. Another problem is that you cannot change your equipment when you are in the action part of the game.. all items have a level requirement to be equipped, and if you level up to become capable of equipping an item you have to wait to get back to town (or every 4 dungeon 'levels' which lead to a savespot).
There's also zero danger to getting killed. you don't seem to lose xp, nor all the items and gold you've accumulated. You just spawn in the town and are told "that was dangerous.. be more careful".
Gems are used to augment your power. Once you create the master sword gem (sword attack +8, every sword strike hits twice, sword throws shockwave) you can basically forget about using the other 3 weapon types because it's so overpowered. That and the +XP gem mean you're constantly ahead of the curve without needing to grind. Again, challenge-buster.
To add 'lengthiness' to the game they added optional 'jobs' that you can take from the NPCs in town. The instance levels are static, and your jobs take place in the exact same instance templates as the 'main mission'. This means it feels like you are playing the stupid level all over again, just to be rewarded with a tiny cutscene about how you retrieved a flower, instead of fighting the end boss. lame.
also the magic system blows.. you have to hold a 'magic' button till it charges up, and after you release the button your elemental buddy shows up (takes another second or so), and then you have another second in which you can either hit the magic button again to launch the buddy, or you can touch him to activate his "support" power (eg. healing), or wait till he does his attack. It's painfully slow to use and by the time he actually attacks the NPC has wandered off. Lame lame lame. See my sword comment earlier.. magic is useless.
I also would have liked tobe able to remap the keys as I found myself hitting the wrong button quite often due to the unintuitive (for me) button layout. Every game should allow button remapping imho.
Take it from me, a huge fan of Secret of Mana... this game is a giant letdown.
This one's for my homey Ebu.

I'm in the market for a new HD display. I have heard rumors that plasma displays loose >50% of their brightness within the first year of ownership. I'm not sure if I believe this. Was hoping someone could shed some light (pun intended) on the subject. Or point me to a reliable online resource. Kthnx.

I went from pretty much giving up on my 360, to seeing all these posts about Gears and now finding out it has Coop.. I'm having a moment of weakness. I even have the instore credit for it, and the Gamestop over here still has a ton of copies. So..
Someone either talk me out of it, or pledge to play Coop with a loser named Bantis!

omg, so fucking funny.
I am planning on selling off some stuff (to clear out my ever growing library) including a nintendo gamecube. This would be with two wavebirds and some games including:
FZero GX, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Eternal Darkness, Everything or Nothing, Gladius, Metroid Prime, PoP: Warrior Within, Soul Calibur, Splinter Cell, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Rouge Leader and Wallace and Gromit.
I do NOT have composite cables for it since I don't have a HDTV.
I am thinking around $100 + shipping for the whole shebang. I would prefer to just sell the whole thing to one person instead of splitting it up. Is this a fair price for the whole thing?

Alfred Thompson's blog is about a student that is 12 but has already been programming for three years, and what he had written was a web browser. The web browser had the features you would expect such as tabbed browsing but it had a lot of features I'd never thought about. For example it was a simple menu option to have the program look up the ownership of a domain using whois. And there were other options to get other bits of information about the web site as well.
I don't want to downplay the kid's success, but the .NET framework handles a lot of the functionality of a web browser, right out of the box. However, he had to at least have made a layout engine, which is quite impressive in and of itself. Congrats to him, and I hope he continues to be successful.
I'm trying to figure out if this kid is for real.
