Specifically, IGA's software uses the IP address for geotargeting of in-game ads (so that European ads are not shown to those in the U.S., for example). It also creates a unique user number that's generated locally, and is able to re-identify the gamer when he next appears online.
In addition, IGA's in-game ad solution does capture the time of day that the user started to play each gaming session - Townsend mentioned, as an example, that "if the brief says 'Males 18 to 34'", the ads may only be served between 6pm and 9pm on a weekday evening or similar, to replicate 'primetime' viewing.
The time that each ad impression takes place is also recorded by IGA, alongside what type of ad content it was (billboard, megaboard, or video stream), the duration (how long was the ad seen for), the size of the ad relative to the player, and the angle of deflection (what angle the ad is viewed at).
No of course, this doesn't cover it for the tin-foil hat types that think EA will use their vague disclaimer to install truly malicious software 2 weeks from now.

W/r to spyware, it's windows, if you look at the thing wrong it's going to get owned/phished... etc. Get a Mac.
As of right now the game is unplayable. This makes the BF2 launch look smooth.

Because, you know, there're still in-game ads.
Just my 2 cents.
There are plenty of other/better/less buggy games to play and spend money on.
If it was free (because of the ads and spyware) it wouldn't even be worth running.

Go EA/DICE! Get ready to see patch 1.02 tomorrow to fix 1.01 patch. Seriously though, they need to get out of this mindset of patching right after release. They couldn't find this "bug" for Titan Mode during playtesting? Titan mode is being sold as the biggest new addition in gameplay and they couldn't even find this bug?!?

Personally, I just picked up BF1942 a few weeks ago, and have been having fun playing that game.
But for them to even ship it with known bugs is pretty lame. gg EA.

Squib has essentially nailed it. The purpose of the gathering is to determine if an ad is viewed by players.

What would your reaction be to Quake Wars having a patch on release?

Buy stuff from companies like Relic: you can play their games without a CD in the drive, play on a LAN without even having a key... or Epic: UT2004 retail is still compatible online with the latest patch - that's because they released the game finished and TESTED!
QA and PROPER playtesting takes a lot of time, manpower and money, something EA just doesn't want to deal with.
Which companies actually CARE about their products? Blizzard, Epic, Relic, Id, Valve - I'm sure there's more out there which I forgot to list... We should give those a big and loud 'all hail' for their gamer spirit.

Release day patching makes me think that this was pushed out the door a little too quickly.
