Triton Shutting Down - Prey Patch Coming

Thanks to your support, the Triton service was a technological success in its launch, but unfortunately it saddens me to announce that the Triton service is offline. The company itself is undergoing an reorganization process. As a Triton customer, one thing that has always been pledged was to make sure that you as a customer would be taken care of. As a result, I wanted to inform those that have purchased games on the system that there will be a patch that will remove the online dependency for the games as promised and allow you to play, backup and reinstall your game that you purchased as you see fit. This patch will be coming very soon, and once the patch is ready, I will send an email with instructions on how to install this patch.

For those that purchased Prey, I have talked with Take 2, 3D Realms, and Human Head studios. 2K has set up a replacement program for customers who purchased Prey via the Triton download service.A new boxed copy of Prey will be shipped to each customer who purchased the game via Triton and www.playtriton.com. You will not have to do anything as you should receive a retail boxed copy of Prey in the mail soon to the address we have on file. This will allow you to move forward with any patches to the game that come out from the publisher/developer.

They should have used Steam. I'm not too sad to hear this news... the less seperate companies trying to create digital distribution platforms, the better. I don't want to have to have 50 different programs in order to get my games online.

This is scary...yes I think I will continue to buy phsyical media that only requires a key to install/play.

Imagine going through your game collection and half the games you own you can't even play anymore because the company is out of business?

Steam is not made by god or microsoft, there is a chance that one day it will be gone. Right now it looks very unlikely, but who knows what tomorrow or the next 10 years bring us.

Hopefully Valve will be so dilligent whenever Steam ends, for everyone who bought things through it that require it to work or activate or find multiplayer servers.

That's pretty shortsited of 3dr/HH to go with a digital distribution platform that doesn't have a contingency plan; although I guess none of them are completely fool proof.

So wait.. theyre shutting the system down... what happens if you have some kind of system failure and lose the game. How do you go about reinstalling it without having to go out to a store and buy the damn thing again?

I guess you either make a backup or you're hosed.

Aw, this is sad. I met Royal at E3 and I was pretty impressed with him and what he was trying to do. I wish I had more to give to Triton at the time, but unfortunately we didn't have anything that lined up at the moment. Well, best of luck in the future with whatever is next.

Well this isn't good... I'll probably avoid all digital distro that isn't steam in the future. Hopefully the new sam and max is junk.

So what about the people who bought it on Triton, and then don't have it currently installed. Are they screwed?

I wonder why they didn't use a system like Trymedia, or even Gamespy's Direct2Drive. I would think that a more high profile service would better suit a game like Prey.

and this is why digital distribution sucks, unless its coming from something that is really really stable (which Steam hopefully is)

Just curious - what was Triton's backup method? (analogous to Steam's backup method)
