Triton Shutting Down - Prey Patch Coming
by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 08, 2006 1:14pm PDTAccording to this post on the 3D Realms forums, the Triton digital distribution service that was used for the online release of Prey is shutting down, just several months after the release of that game. However, it looks like people who bought the game from Triton won't be totally screwed as Triton's Royal O'Brien made this post later in the thread (thanks FiringSquad) mentioning that he's working on a patch that will remove the game's dependency on Triton.
I am making sure I have permission to get this pach out first so that I dont run into legal issues. When some of the dust settles, I should be able to give a better picture. From my perspective on digital distribution, this is essential that the patch be released so that no one is left out in the cold and it doesnt get a mark against it. I'm working with the guys at 3DR and HH for Prey. If you just purchased it and you didnt get a CD key, or have comments / flames (or not), drop me a line at [ thebox a.t. obwando.com ] and I will do my best to get things resolved as I move forward on my next project. That is my personal email box, and not a company address.

For those that purchased Prey, I have talked with Take 2, 3D Realms, and Human Head studios. 2K has set up a replacement program for customers who purchased Prey via the Triton download service.A new boxed copy of Prey will be shipped to each customer who purchased the game via Triton and www.playtriton.com. You will not have to do anything as you should receive a retail boxed copy of Prey in the mail soon to the address we have on file. This will allow you to move forward with any patches to the game that come out from the publisher/developer.
As I promised before launch, for those that have any questions on the address to be sent to, or the patch of the games on the system, you can still reach me at [ thebox a.t. obwando.com] and I will do my best to support you during this time of transition.
Best wishes,
Royal 'OBWANDO' O'Brien

Imagine going through your game collection and half the games you own you can't even play anymore because the company is out of business?

Steam is not made by god or microsoft, there is a chance that one day it will be gone. Right now it looks very unlikely, but who knows what tomorrow or the next 10 years bring us.

That's pretty shortsited of 3dr/HH to go with a digital distribution platform that doesn't have a contingency plan; although I guess none of them are completely fool proof.
Better luck next time!
I guess you either make a backup or you're hosed.
Score one for online distribution.

We needed a more generic distribution scheme, but unfortunatelly this wasn't it. Good luck on your next endeavours, Obwando.
