GRAW Scores Top Honors at BAFTA
[ps2] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [ds] [psp] [gba] The British Academy of Film and Television Arts held its annual video game award ceremony this week, awarding honors to seventeen games in categories such as Innovation, Artistic Achievement, Character, and others, as well as an additional "Gamers' Award" selected by readers of publication The Sun. This year, Ubisoft Paris' Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (PS2, Xbox, X360, PC) took the highest prize of Best Game, as well as another win for Technical Achievement. It was nominated in a total of eight categories including, somewhat surprisingly, Strategy. Ubisoft celebrated the win with a press release headlined, "Ghost Recon is Officially the Best Game." Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was the strongest publisher represented at the show, picking up a total of five wins from 19 nominations for games such as LocoRoco (PSP), Shadow of the Colossus (PS2), SingStar Rocks! (PS2), and Buzz!: The BIG Quiz (PS2). Notably, SCEI's Shadow of the Colossus won both Artistic Achievement and Action & Adventure. Nintendo grabbed 10 nominations; of those, it scored two awards, Innovation for Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain? (NDS). Ubisoft was next with eight nomations, every single one for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Electronic Arts tied with eight nods, winning Sports with EA Chicago's Fight Night Round 3 (PS2, Xbox, X360, PSP). Other notable wins included a deserving Screenplay award for Double Fine's Psychonauts (PS2, Xbox, PC) and a perhaps unexpected Gameplay award for Traveller's Tales' LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (PS2, Xbox, GCN, X360, NDS, PSP, GBA, PC). Ubisoft's Detoc: "Our goal is...to beat EA"
[ps2] [ps3] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [nintendo] [ds] [psp] [gba] Speaking to Reuters yesterday, Ubisoft's North American head Laurent Detoc expressed his company's desire to climb to the top of the video game publishing heap. "Our goal is not to sell to EA but to beat EA," said Detoc. Electronic Arts is currently the world's most successful video game publisher; Ubisoft holds the #4 slot worldwide and #5 in North America. In 2004, EA purchased a 19.9% stake in Ubisoft, an action Ubisoft considered hostile. Detoc's statement this week is more confident than statements made last year by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who admitted that "it would be difficult to block" a full scale hostile takeover attempt by EA. Part of Detoc's enthusiasm comes from Ubisoft's early investment in Wii development, which is seeing the company release more launch titles for the system than even Nintendo's own first party development, and puts it leagues ahead other third party publishers which have only more recently begun stepping up Wii support. Speaking on the controller, Detoc explained, "You get it right away" when picking it up for the first time. "The Wii is unlikely not to succeed," he continued. "The curiosity factor is going to help [Nintendo] and it's an impulse buy for most people." Detoc hopes that Ubisoft Paris' upcoming launch title Red Steel (Wii) can achieve a similar reception to Rare's bestselling GoldenEye 007 (N64). -
No PSP Price Cut This Year, In Case You Were Wondering
[psp] One of the most common rumors about any video game console is that a price cut is coming any day now, and PSP has been getting its own share of such rumors recently. However, according to a Reuters report sourced from Sony representatives, Sony's portable system won't be getting one this year. Sony is currently selling the machine in its standard $250 package, as well as at a $200 price point which does not include pack-in items. Sony is banking on the system's library of games, which will have grown to about 230 by year end, to move units. -

Unfortunately, the only video they are showing right now is the same one from TGS .You can download it (another site I read supposedly grabbed a 720p version) and its apparently in 720p resolution. Atleast its directfeed!

your simplifying all the subjects your commenting on to a ridiculous extent.
One question though, you keep mentioning that great visuals are benefit or a pro for the 360 and ps3, why is this the case? Sure they will be nice to look at, but what makes you think better graphics will make the games on the system any better? If we forgot for a moment about the different controllers and all the other factors.. surely a system that is designed from start to finish to create stunning visuals, is going to put pressure on developers to focus on that aspect of game development, as most of their customer base are expecting that. I.e putting most of your time and man power into creating fantastic visuals, and as we all know, in this "HD era" we've just entered, making the most of the new consoles is going to require such a vast team of people.
Look at the DS for an example of how this kind of thing works. The system was designed from the ground up to be easy to develop for, the simple technology inside meant developers didnt have the oppertunity to blow us away. Early on developers caught on to the fact that the people buying this system were doing so because they were looking for something unique and fun, rather than mind blowingly technically impressive. This has allowed developers not only the oppertunity to dedicate more time to game design rather than graphical design, but has allowed smaller teams and indepdant developers to make their mark on the games industry. And on top of that it means more games more quickly.
Now dont get me wrong i'm obviously not saying good visuals are a band thing. But dont pretend to yourself that graphics purely for graphics sake are in anway benefiting the industry, the customer or the games themselves. Graphics or technology in general that opens up new gameplay prospects are obviously a good thing, those videos of assasins creed look amazing, and i'm sure that kinda gameplay could never have been achieved a few generations ago, so thats a positive application of the consoles power. Similarlly GTA3 was a positive application of the PS2's power. But i ask, how many games this generation made use of the leap in technology from the previous generation to achieve something new? I cant think of many.
I'm just glad this time we have both options, i'd be really fucked off if nintendo has just released another system just like the ps3 or 360, how dull would that be. Frankly i cant afford a ps3 or a 360, or for that matter an HD tv, so it will be a wii for me. If i had the choice i'd have all three, but i'm poor.

This is for my school's senior project and we want to feature more games in the coming weeks with Episode 2 featuring Might and Magic: Dark Messiah and then an episode or two after that Battlefield 2142. What games would you like us to buy and play and review so you don't have to this season?
Thank you for your input.

1. EA is making a hostile move toward Ubisoft with the strategy intent to take over or at least undermine their operations.
2. EA sees Ubisoft as a solid and growing publisher in the industry and considers them a good investment that will give them some nice returns down the road.
Either way, I look at Ubisoft's intent to take EA head-on as a positive thing. I only hope they or other publishers don't end up as casualties.

Plus, the co-op missions were wonderful.
I like their optimism though. And at least they have a goal. If it's well made game it could sell pretty well up until the next big FPS for Wii is released which is most likely Metroid Prime 3 unless there's a sleeper in there like, say, Far Cry. I guess it depends on how big the install base for the system gets to.
