Late Night Consoling
by Chris Remo, Sep 29, 2006 8:00pm PDTA bit of a slow news day today, following a whole bunch of crazy events.
- Microsoft today announced that Epic Games' upcoming shooter Gears of War (X360) will be present and playable following upcoming advance screenings of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco. The events will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 in unspecified AMC Theatres locations in the four cities. To sign up for the event and receive a ticket, head over to the official promotion site. The announcement was quick to note, however, that receipt of a ticket does not guarantee admission, which will apparently be conducted on a first come, first served basis. Presumably, the event will feature multiplayer gaming; Epic has been reluctant to publically show too much of the game's single-player campaign thus far, prefering to keep it under wraps as long as possible. The event is also reminiscent of a Halo 2 multiplayer event conducted at movie theaters across the country almost two years ago, at which players were able to try out a multiplayer version of Bungie's shooter before it hit stores. The event was related to the well known "I Love Bees" alternate reality marketing project.

[xbox360] - Speaking to trade publication MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment's Ken Kutaragi had a rather succinct answer to MCV's inquiries as to whether Sony competitors Microsoft and Nintendo may eat into the company's market share. "I don't care," said the PlayStation head. He did, however, speak on Sony's current manufacturing difficulties. "Right now, it is an issue, because we canÂ’t manufacture enough blue laser diodes for our PlayStation 3s," he said. "But we will resolve that." When asked to confirm any PlayStation 3 launch titles, Sony Computer Entertainment Worlwide Studios head Phil Harrison cited Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man and Game Republic's Genji Days of the Blade as "definite launch titles." Specific territories were not named, though it is likely that both Japan and North America will be seeing the games at launch this November.

likely the ps3 will have a price drop at ship or soon after, making the price difference between a high end (un-nerfed) xbox and a low end ps3 about $100, except that the ps3 will have bluray and hdmi. that stuff doesnt really matter now, but it will matter within some years, and they will be strong selling points. MS really missed the boat on this one, and i'm pretty sure history will reflect that. console hardware addons never sell, HDDVD isnt going to be helped by the xbox effort.
they have managed to put themselves in a similar position to be the dreamcast vs the ps2. the dreamcast was cheaper than a ps2 and had more and better titles at the time, but it was also percieved to not be truly 'next gen'. sony made sure that perception stuck. it didnt have dvd, which wasnt that big of a deal at the time, but within a matter of years it was a very big deal and a major selling point to the ps2's favor.
the HDDVD addon wont sell, and it wont help xbox sales either. and more than any other console, the xbox has this stigma of being an FPS teen/20something male haven. their current and future game lineup unfortunately reflects this. that niche wont help them sell xboxes, or move games in an already crowded and flooded market. these are problems MS really needs to work on, if they ever intend on being #1.

The second part where Lt. Winters and company trained and fought that first day in Normandy was one of the best sequences of any series I've seen. I can't wait to watch the rest of this series.
