With DEFCON unlocking on Steam, a demo of this new strategy game from Darwinia developer Introversion Software is now available. The demo includes a rolling demo, the seven mission tutorial mode and the ability to play a two player multiplayer game.

Cool thing: hit "escape" twice and it minimizes the game, from fullscreen mode, to the system tray. Has the little "nuclear" icon. And at least in my case it just matched the resolution of my screen so I was instantly back at my desktop.

Hmm, I don't think this game is for me either. I think perhaps people of my generation like the idea of this game, but as a game itself, I haven't found it interesting. I don't think it works.

I've played hundred of fps shooters and probably killed well over 1.5 million enemy without even blinking in all the blood guts and gore. But theres something very disturbing that makes me cringe in Defcon when I see a little text message saying, "Hong Kong destroyed 1.5 million dead."

The only sucky thing about this - if you bought the game on steam the authentication is busted so it treats you like a demo player, annoying splash screen at the end and all.

Fuck you Valve. No more Steam purchases for me (two is enough).

This game is awesome though. 10 bucks well spent.

Loved Darwinia and most probably will love this. I actually really cared for the Darwinians going all emo about seeint their world beeing destroyed. Naturally i immediately ordered the game on CD to avoid the Steam crap - yes i have an account with HL2 collecters edition but Steam is so often boggled by difficulties that i really question the ways of digital distribution.

Dunno, I must debunk the shackhype, I found this game pretty dry. Watching that stuff stroll across the screen even in full acceleration is mind numbingly boring.

Nice idea, just too slow of a game for me. (No matter what the speed setting is)

I've only played about 10 games or so, but it's not bad. I can see myself getting bored with it rather quickly. You really do need to play this with friends, though. So far all the public games I've played, my opponent quit at the first sign of trouble.

My understanding is that we're both supposed to get our asses kicked and someone just loses less, right? Oh, well...back to nuking Kursk. I hate that map.

With the exception of not being able to connect to multiplayer games everything seems to be working fine for me. It authenticated without a problem.

The game seems simple enough to grasp, judging by the toturial at least, but difficult to master, judging by every single game I've started since. If I only could do something about being owned all the time.

Has anyone worked out a strategy that works for you?

If you bought the game on steam and cannot authenticate in-game, try to alt-tab or control-esc out of the game. There's that damn Windows firewall popup message on the desktop. After I unblocked the game, the authentication worked for me.
