Late Night Consoling

66
Well, Microsoft brought out some big guns today. Two additional Halo games in the works other than Halo 3, exclusive Grand Theft Auto content, and console exclusivity for the next Splinter Cell. That last one was a bit of a surprise, given Ubisoft's usual practice of bringing games to every conceivable platform. I wonder if they have a similar plan in the works for PlayStation 3, another "exclusive" Splinter Cell game that has different details but happens to share a good deal of details with the 360 game.
  • X06 Strikes

    [xbox360]

Microsoft made several noteworthy announcements today during its X06 event in Barcelona. Some other details not covered in our earlier overview article follow:

    - Film director Peter Jackson (Bad Taste, Forgotten Silver, The Making of "The Frighteners") and screenwriter Fran Walsh (Meet the Feebles, Jack Brown Genius, Dead Alive) will be partnering with Microsoft Game Studios to form new development studio Wingnut Interactive. Jackson and Walsh have signed an agreement to produce two Xbox 360-exclusive titles. The first will be a new game set in the Halo universe, to be co-developed by Halo creator Bungie Studios. The second will be an original Wingnut property; no details on the latter project were announced.

    - DOOM is not only coming to Xbox Live Arcade, it has arrived, and is available for 800 Microsoft Points ($10). It features four-player online and cooperative modes, both online and split-screen.

    - The Amiga version of Sensible Software's Sensible World of Soccer will be coming to Live Arcade at an unspecified date, courtesy of Codemasters. The game, first released in 1994, was a more ambitious followup to the original 1992 title Sensible Soccer.

    - Both Irrational's BioShock and Ubisoft's next Splinter Cell game following Rogue Agent were confirmed to be Xbox 360 console exclusives. Previously, it had been rumored that BioShock may be in the works for PlayStation 3 as well. Each of the two games will also be heading to PC.

  • Oblivion Engulfs PS3, PSP

    [ps3] [psp]

After months of rumors that Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (X360, PC) is in the works for PlayStation 3 and PSP, it looks like confirmation has finally been obtained. According to 1UP, the November issue of Official PlayStation Magazine (published by 1UP owner Ziff Davis) contains the first preview of the games. The PS3 version will feature a new faction, the Knights of the Round, which Bethesda calls "the good Dark Brotherhood." This faction will provide a more tangible incentive for taking the moral high road, something executive producer Todd Howard pointed out as being lacking in the original game. The PSP version of the game will be entitled The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion, and will feature a new setting and story. "The Elder Scrolls Travels" is the brand used for previous mobile editions of The Elder Scrolls on cell phones and N-Gage.

  • Guitar Hero II (Officially) Coming to Xbox 360

    [xbox360]

Publisher RedOctane today officially announced, finally, that Harmonix's Guitar Hero II (PS2) will be headed to Xbox 360. The game will feature microtransaction song downloads over Xbox Live Marketplace. No release date was given for the game; the PlayStation 2 version is slated to ship November 7.

I've already bought Doom like 4 times in various formats. Is this version... blinged up at all? Other than the live co-op.

I was sold at $5. I too have bought Doom several times. For $10 they are going to have to give me something more than a straight port. They borked the price of SFII as well.

I understand the business model behind it. Adding $5 to the price doesn't halve your audience, so you make more money. However that equation doesn't take into account the fact that the people who don't buy the game are in turn not talking to their friends or spreading the word about the game. In my case they just become more and more disillusioned about the price of everything on the live marketplace.

I was sold on SFII until I heard the price. 800 points maybe, but not 1200. After hearing about their plan to milk Lumines, the first thing that came to my mind when I heard Doom was "whats the price?" Something is seriously wrong. I am interested, I am willing to pay, they just have the price wrong.

It's sad considering they probably have it on the shelves in their study still ready to play under Dosbox or with a new front end.

However MS has so few games out at the moment, what else is there :/

It's so much easier to fire up the 360 and play with your friends who are doing the same online, sat on a nice couch with a wireless controller, big TV and 5.1 sound... I think it's cool that the Doom port is available and people say the controls are really well done. Not tried it yet myself but I will tonight if I have time.

It's a blast from the past! I think it's awsome just for the nostalgic factor, it's a straight port of the original, done right.

Each map has its own single-player leaderboards, you get a score based on time/kills/items/secrets or something.

I've played 4-5 DM games online so far, a couple fast, intense and awsome... a couple horribly lagged, like someone was on AOL dialup.
