Late Night Consoling

- Third party PlayStation 3 games have long been widely assumed to be priced in the same range as Xbox 360 games in North America, and various publishing executives have made statements to that effect. Now, it appears that Sony itself has confirmed this assumption, with a listing of seven PS3 games, all but one of which are from third party publishers, priced at $59.99. With a notable few exceptions such as Epic's Gears of War, Microsoft prices standard editions of its own first party published software for $49.99, $10 below the third party price point. Sony does not appear to be taking the same strategy, with Sony Online Entertainment's launch title Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom coming in at $59.99. However, Sony has yet to comment officially on pricing in any capacity, and these price points, while likely to be an accurate predictor of the final pricing scheme, do not come with a formal announcement.

[ps3] - This month, Nintendo stated that the Opera-developed web browser for Wii would be freely downloadable until June 2007, after which users wishing to download the software would have to pay an unspecified fee. Today, Opera confirmed this plan worldwide, with the browser remaining a free download until June 30, 2007. Opera has still yet to announce a price for the software. The browser supports Flash and AJAX content, and contains the full range of features present in the desktop PC version of Opera. Mouse gestures are adapted to operate with the Wii's motion-sensitive remote controller. Opera also developed a web browser for Nintendo DS, which was released in Japan earlier this year and is set for release in Europe on October 6.

[xbox360] - Earlier this year, Kameo: Elements of Power (X360) developer Rare held an open contest to design the best new skin for heroine Kameo and each of her ten Warrior forms. Entrants submitted a new concept design for a particular character, and Rare has chosen one design per character as the winning entries. The eleven winners, hailing from five countries, have had their designs converted to in-game skins by the development team. Today, publisher Microsoft announced that these skins are available for free download via Xbox Live Marketplace. The winning designs for Pummelweed and Ash can be seen on Rare's official site.

[xbox360] - Japan's Computer Entertainment Software Association has announced the winners of the 2006 Japan Game Awards, handed out during the recently concluded Tokyo Game Show. Following the ceremony, Capcom, which by most gamers' accounts has been in fine form across nearly all platforms recently, announced that it was the recipient of more 2006 Japan Game Awards than any other third party publisher, with five awards. Among all publishers, Nintendo took the lead with seven awards, despite not maintaining a presence at the show. All of the categories apply to games that have been released in the last year, with the exception of the Future Division, which is determined by the general public and is given to the games with the best TGS showing. The Indies Division applies to any games produced non-commercially. Check out the full list of winners here.

Have there ever been "BEST FOREIGN GAME" awards at E3, or any other video game convention? These people need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize that Europe and North America actually contribute MORE to the video game world than they do.

Do the Roushii thing and simply purchase the games after they've been out for 3+ months, they are still fairly new and anywhere from 15->25$ cheaper.
There's no CD keys on a console, so a second hand copy of the game is cheap too and will likely still work.

Does no one remember Killer Instinct Gold? It held an 80 dollar price tag for a while. Yah, it stunk, but it still existed. We've been spoiled with 40 and 50 dollar games, sometimes costs do go up.
I can't imagine programming for the 360 or PS3 is easy by any means, or is inexpensive to do so. If you don't like it, stick with your PS2 , Xbox, or Gamecube.

$60 is fuck all compared to what we Brits were paying in the SNES era, with most games costing 40 quid ($70 or so?) and many costing another ten.
Britain does suck though, but games are still around the $60+ mark there anyway.
Of course, the simple solution is to just not buy the games. There aren't exactly that many titles for PS3 that look like must haves anyway - unless you are a DMC, MGS, FF or GT die-hard.
Of course, with 360 games costing the same, maybe we should all just stick to PC gaming ;) Hmm, HL2 ep2 (also, metastasis 3!), Supreme Commander, Bioshock, Crysis... there is enough for now to keep us going. I wonder if any of those games will cost $60-70.
