Battlefield 2142 GONE GOLD
by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 22, 2006 1:05pm PDTWith an October release set several months ago it's not much of a surprise, but the official Battlefield 2142 website now notes that the game has gone gold. Look for it in stores around October 17.
EA and DICE are pleased to announce that Battlefield 2142 has gone gold. Meaning that after months of internal testing and balancing, the game has been handed over to the quality assurance team for final testing. Congratulations to everyone involved, and a big thank you to everyone involved in the Beta testing.

What they really mean is they got it to the point where it is playable. I wonder if they'll ever get the balancing thing down...

I loved BF2 (bugs, rape, and all!) but I found myself dumping more and more money on those expansion packs just so I could keep up and play with my buddies online. If 6 months later I have to buy an expansion pack to keep up with everyone, I'm ditching this whole series, as wonderful as it is. I hate it when people divide the community up like that. "What game are you playing?" "BF2." "Special Forces? Armored Fury? or Vanilla?" Next time they ask me that question I'll have a much simpler answer: "Quake Wars"

They have already tried their best to split up the BF-2 community with lots of add-ons which can only be played by the people who bought them.
Now we'll have another split. :-/

I had enough fun in BF1942 to check out the BF2 demo. I enjoyed that enough to purchase the full game. After that, though, things got ugly, and I'll be goddamned if I'm going to purchase another of the BF series if they continue down the road they've been going on.
I'm not even going to say "I'll be playing ________ instead", because it doesn't matter. There is no way I am going to support in-game advertising in a futuristic FPS. There is no way I will spend money on a game that will be coming out as a buggy mess. There is no goddamn way I will waste my money on a game that will have the WORST. INTERFACE. EVER. aside from the travesty that BF2 had.
Nope. Not a chance. I learned my lesson from BF2. Fool me once, etc etc.

BF2 still needs fixing, and they havent fixed anything that was wrong in BF2 bar air rape for this. It still has musical flags, overpowered APC's, terrible infantry movement and rediculously random instances of firing entire clips of lead into someone and having them turn round and one shot you.
And the server browser is just as bad, but now you can use the scroll wheel. But you get a coloured box instead of a ping number.

Is there any reasonable possibility that the beta testers who say it is still buggy weren't testing a curent build? If it weren't an current build, that would kind of undermine the process a little wouldn't it?

At the same time, games (and movies, for that matter) take a long time to make, and I find it hard to believe that one could just be thrown together in order to shove another product out the door to beat up on competition. So, does this mean that these similar product releases (of both movies and games) are just coincidental, or are these industries (of both movies and games) just so small that gossip about what one company is working on makes its way to all the other companies resulting in company B poaching ideas from company A?
Just wondering. Ultimately, the question of which of these games is worth my money won't be answered until they're both available and their degree of stability / balance / fun has been assessed by the community. In favor of BF2142: it should already have gone through several iterations of patches. In favor of Quake Wars: it has already been delayed, presumably to apply more spit and polish.

But fear not, they're already working on the first patch, which will come out 2 years from now, will be titled 'Battlefield 2542" and will retail for $59.99.
it is kinda fun though

Tribes 3 looks 100x better than this game though, too bad no one ever bought it/ made servers /patched it. It coulda been the best FPS ever IMO.
BF2 is still fun though when I'm not playing WoW. So, how good is Quake Wars?

This time I'll wait for a few patches before even considering buying the game. Not to mention that I can't have enough of BF2 right now so I see no urge to get this one.
