On Napster Banning

If you're a student at a college where administrators blocked Napster, maybe this guide I found will help you get past the blocking through a proxyserver. There's a section on starting a proxy server in Linux and they have links to Windows proxy servers too.
update: you can also try the following solution sent to us by Woburn, provided this is the way your school banned Napster too:

My college also blocked Napster, but we found an easy way around their ban because they only banned it through their name server. By simply adding:
208.184.216.238 www.napster.com
208.184.216.223 server.napster.com
to the "hosts.sam" file in my windows directory, then by renaming it to just "hosts". Napster works thank to this, and with IE i can get to the website, but for some reason Netscape doesn't work, and I just wanted Napster to work so I haven't bothered trying to make it work.

  • I emailed that work-around to the shugashack because many colleges (mine included) don\'t know why they banned Napster, they\'re simply doing it because other colleges are doing it, and that pisses me off. It\'s not like this is some huge hack, it\'s simply a workaround to a half-assed attempt at a block.
They wouldn\'t make it this simple to get by if it was really a huge problem. I think it\'s so funny that now many kids are being kept from downloading songs that they hear on the radio, so now they spend all their free time playing copied/warezed pc games and burnt playstation games. What a world we live in.

  • You college goin, whining mutha fuckahs. Back when I was in college, 14 fucking years ago, Doom wasnt even invented. John Romero and The Carmack were probably just learning to masturbate. If we wanted to entertain ourselves, we ingested about 2 gallons of beer and hit the occasional doobie. I got to fuck everything that moved (excluding the animals...) and didnt have to really worry about asshole injected death syndrome (aids). So now you buttfucks have the luxury of T3\'s and you\'re whining! Goddammit if I wanted porn, I had to rent a movie or buy a 5 dollar magazine you assjockeys. In other words, STFU about your Napster. Get on the newsgroups and download the shit the way God intended you to do. Goddamn preppie fuggers. Why back in my day.. eh fuck ya. (in my best eric cartman voice) I hate you guys.

  • #62...

I go to the Universtiy of Illinois, and I\'m pretty sure my upload speeds are capped. It sucks a fatty. I\'m pretty sure that Napster stuff is blocked too, although they haven\'t come out and said it. Considering I haven\'t been able to connect to it for a week, I\'d say its a safe asumption. Plus, the \"hosts\" workaround didn\'t seem to work...

My school is a bandwidth bitch! Being right in the center of the Midwest, with huge pr0n pipes running to and from us to Chicago and other huge places, our bandwidth is worth a lot of money, and condsidering some of the bigger dorms are having net traffic of a gig a second during peak times, they\'re really cracking down on a lot of internet related stuff. Grrr...

  • #55, hello... an external port mapped proxy gets around that.

How much is a CD really worth anyway? Nothing if you hate the music. maybe $2 if you just want the only good single on it, and maybe $8 bucks if it\'s all good baby and you want to reward the BAND not the ass raping label.

Until getting your hands on music is out of the contol of the profit raping labels and into the artists, things wont change much. It\'s got to get easier, cheaper, and more efficient.. (hm... I thought about not posting this halfassed short rant... but I\'ve decided to look kind of stupid and do it anway)

  • #52:

\"Napster PWNS me. Keep that rare stuff flowing. I wish I could log all of the Slayer downloads from me. Having all 11 albums PWNS my bandwidth.\"

Yeah, then the MPAA could bust you and all of them at once! Why do you think there\'s no logs? By the way, since the napster protocol is broken, it is trivial to set up a server as bait with all sorts of stuff people want and log all connections (i.e. the MPAA might do it). Of course you could always just run netstat -a in a loop before, but now it\'s much easier and automated.
