Epic plots new Make Something Unreal contest is a news story on Computer & Video Games, quoting Epic's Mark Rein on the possibility of another Make Something Unreal contest. The first contest resulted in the Red Orchestra team receiving an Unreal Engine license.

I left Epic Games before the contest finished, so maybe many of these things were fixed in later releases of patches, I hope so, it was quite a pain to install those hundreds of mods and have to copy over an untouched version of the game each time.

The Make Something Unreal contest in 2004 wasn't the first one. There was a Make Something Unreal contest in the late 90s also for 1 million dollars.

I think this time for the contest we are going to see a greater amount of difference in the mods that are entered. One of the issues I had with the last contest was that soo many of the mods that were entered were all the same genre, tactical shooters.

Personally I liked Air Buccaneers most since it was incredibly original and a blast to play with some well co-ordinated teams.

I really hope that UT2007 handles mods better than 2004/2003, it was a pain having to trash my UT2004 install for every mod I had to install for the contest.

I hope they do and they give the big prize to the best game/mod and not the one that will get their engine into a new genre.

Didn't Red Orchestra move to steam? That should teach them there were many better mods out there, but they wanted the WW2 one.

The best part about the contest was the requirement at each stage that the mods had to have a public release. Every couple of months you'd get this wave of mod releases and updates to play.

Sure beats the current trend of 3 years of development and all the "players" get are some renders of unskinned weapon models. Someone tell Valve to put together a "Make Something Source" contest.
