Heroes of Might & Magic V: Hammers of Fate Announced
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 30, 2006 9:21am PDTIt's only been a few months since Heroes of Might & Magic V was released, but Ubisoft today announced that an expansion pack is coming this November. Heroes of Might & Magic V: Hammers of Fate, like the original game, is being developed by Nival Interactive. Here's what will be included
* New faction: Introducing the brand-new Dwarves faction, made up of heroic warriors and rune magic adepts who stalk Ashan's deepest mountains and most hostile regions. * A brand-new adventure: Featuring 15 new missions, new heroes, and improved cut-scenes, the new campaign will lead players even deeper into the dramatic events that began with Heroes of Might and Magic V. * Extended game experience: Includes a wealth of new spells and abilities, five new single-player maps, 10 new multiplayer maps, new buildings, new artifacts, and new neutral creatures, Heroes of Might and Magic V: Hammers of Fate gives players the tools to develop new tactics, and further their game experience both online and offline. You can find a couple of screenshots right here.

Haven't played a HOMM for some time now, and the underlying basics are still the same, but I am really enjoying this so far.
But oh god, the lack of sleep might kill me first!
... which the combat was, but the AI sucks, and more critically, no map editor! This from a series that's had an almost obscene amount of awesome fan related content created for it.
Ignoring that, the multiplayer options and maps were a complete trainwreck - I wasted many hours in the past playing Heroes with friends on a lan, taking turns stomping around the world, but this game had forced fixed starting locations, forced alliances, and a paltry number of included maps (and again, no map editor!)
That plus some annoying performance issues (in a turn based strategy game, awesome), and a fiddly annoying camera added up to a lot of no fun.
Beautiful graphics, and the factions and especially tactical combat are very solid, but the other issues are just too annoying.
Now they're trying to shovel out an expansion before they even finish patching the main product? I'll pass, thanks.
