Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Aug 23, 2006 6:00pm PDTWell hey I guess it has been a long while since we had a touch of down time so we got a touch of it last night! Yeah! Sadly we're installing 3 more servers on Friday though which may make that situation even more rare. Dont worry we'll try!
- The future of hard drives - The Wizard is on DVD now! - FireFox team loves MS - FTC looking at net neutrality - Dell ditches music playerLastly, I assume you girls have seen the new TF2 footage etc? We'll hopefully have the HD direct feed versions for you on FileShack soon.

You still gonna post your BF2142 Beta impressions? Despite the games general unpopularity around here, I am interested in hearing them.

As many of you know, I'm quite keen on this whole TrackIR thing. I got a free unit from the guys at NaturalPoint to use in my future Armed Assault preview, and since then I've done a few pretty solid videos showing off how they work (for instance: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-989585601896924025&hl=en ). The vids are now on NaturalPoint's site and everything, and they like them.
I'm also obviously a fan of Armed Assault, and as my post history shows I'm very excited to see TIR's being put to excellent use in ArmA, and I intend to cover that extensively in the preview/review I'll be doing. This is all on the record already.
Anyhow, I've been approached by the NaturalPoint guys about doing a promotional thing for TrackIR's. The short version is that it'd be a banner that would have a discount associated with it, so that anyone using the banner would get x-many dollars off the cost of a TIR:4. On top of that, I'd get a small percentage of each sale from that banner.
Now, a few points I'd like to make clear before asking the question..
1. I've never made any money off of my site, ever. I've never done any advertising on it, and I never plan to do any kind of blanket advertising.
2. I believe in the TrackIR's, and it's not a belief inspired by dreams of making phat lewt off of referral sales.
3. If I did this, I would be completely up-front about it and would explain the whole "Use this banner link and you'll get $__ off, and I'll make money from each sale" thing.
So, my question. If I were to go ahead and do this, would any of you consider it to be "selling out" or dishonest or anything of the sort? Losing credibility, shilling, whatever? Put in my position, would you do it?
TLDR: I can potentially make money promoting a product that I believe in. This is good, yes?

no one measures drive capacity in "pickup trucks filled with books," the same way that no one measures volume in "full grown elephants."
why can't they say something more sensible, like "12.5TB (12800GB)?" or do harddrive guys specify multipliers in 1000 instead of 1024? i forget.

Now i'm really excited specifically because i'll actually be able to play WoW without my PC turning off during raids, and I'll be able to play games newer and better than WoW on this. The old Athlon XP 1800+ will be turned into a file server... i'm so glad i never have to build a pc again for the next few years at least. Thanks for your advice :)

I'm on a bit of a fantasy kick now so maybe something in the same genre is good. I've heard a lot of people talk about the Malazan seires, any good?
A few days ago someone on here also suggested Little, Big, which looks promising.
Any other suggestions (already read the song of fire and ice series up to date)

Here's two clips pertaining to Big Up Productions' next DVD release, Dosage IV.
The Great Roof
The Nose is arguably the most famous bigwall climb anywhere in the world. Lynn Hill famously made the first free ascent of this 30 pitch 5.14a route in 1993 in under 24 hours. For 12 years some of the most famous bigwall climbers attempted to repeat this feat without success until October 14 2005 when Tommy Caldwell and his wife Beth Rodden complete the second free ascent of The Nose. Two days later, Caldwell free climbed The Nose in under 12 hours. Astonishingly, Caldwell then climbed The Nose followed by Freerider on the 30th in 23 hours and 23 minutes for a total of 67 pitches of difficult climbing: up El Capitan twice in less than a day.

Coupe de Grace
We have Dave Graham finishing up his project Coupe de Grace in Bellinzona, Switzerland. Coupe de Grace is a 5.15a sport line that Graham bolted. Here's a clip of his initial attempts from Dosage III:

After screwing with single player for a bit (which is really just to get used to controls, there's no AI to fight against), I just had some great, crazy bloody multi-player matches.

Our 360 died last night, so we called this morning and it went something like this:
"Hay, my 360 died last night, can I get a new one?"
"Ok"
"bye"
"bye"
Didn't even have to pack the old one or anything, just brought the console in, then opened a box and exchanged it.
