UT Engine Update
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 02, 2000 5:49am PSTTim Sweeney updated the Unreal Tech page with info on how the Playstation 2 version of the Unreal Tournament engine is coming along, it's a big post though so I'll only paste the first part:
After three weeks of hard work, Brandon Reinhart brought the engine up and running in bare-bones form, and he's now working on input, file management, and scripting. I've taken over the Playstation2 renderer and am working on texture mapping and blending. The next couple of months will be exciting, as the console engine goes from "working, but just barely" (as it is now) to "playable" to "kickass".The update ends with the message that consoles will be a big priority for Epic from this point forward.
Progress is going really well now. At first, we felt a bit of culture shock, because the Playstation2's to-the-metal development tools are a major shift from Windows' multiple layers of abstraction. However, once you get into the "I Am A Console Developer" mindset, it feels really free and enlightening to have direct access to all the hardware's functionality. Long live hardware registers and DMA! :)
