Updated Quake 4 Linux Binaries

4

The .plan file (yes someone is still using those) of id Software's Timothee Besset notes that a new build of the Quake 4 Linux binaries is now available. The 1.32 release addresses installer and SMP issues found after the release of 1.3. You can find the updated files on FileShack.

You know, one thing I've always wondered (and maybe I used to know but have forgotten) is, where did this term ".plan" come from and what does it mean exactly? Just a visual play on words or something else?

A long time ago, like 97 or something, most game developers used to have a ".plan". It was basically a text file they kept somewhere, and they updated it sometimes. Some websites would pool these .plan and present them on the web. You'd learn news about the games, the developers and their copmpanies, from such .plan files. Once it was the main way to get those kind of news.

You can think them of nerd-ish developer blogs, but before blogs were invented. It's not used anymore... for once thing, it's just easier to have a blog/website; and second, all news is usually filtered by the publisher and its PR machine, so it's not common to have that direct link to the developers' mind anymore. Which is sad.

      Oh, and also:
