digitalburro is in town this week so we have to give him a NYC Shacker welcome. Thursday seems to be best so we're doing something on Thursday night.
What are we doing? I have no idea! I told nyranger66 and dahanese to figure something out, but we have no plans set. dahanese recommended a rooftop bar ( http://www.gridskipper.com/travel/new-york/230-fifth-rooftop-bar-171043.php ), but it seems very pricey to me.
Reply to this post if you're sure you can do something on Thursday night. If we have a smaller group than usual (since it's such short notice), it might help our options. If you have any ideas, suggest them!

I've been playing it on and off all day today, and I'm not terribly impressed. It's very much a GTA clone (not a bad thing!) but it doesn't bring a whole lot of new elements to the table.
Graphics: Nice, but not impressive. Less than I'd expect from a 360 title. There's more variation in pedestrians than GTA, but there's also memory issues - stuff disappears all too quickly once you drive by it. I still can't fulfill my fantasy racing past a nice car, turning around and chasing it down. I tried it about 10 times (drive past a car, take my time turning around, chase it down), and 8 of those the car was gone. The other two it was either still there, or I got lucky and the same car popped up in approximately the same place. There's some limited ragdoll which is cool, but it also creates those always-awkward ragdoll situations, where a character is folded in half but gets up and walks away from the accident. The damage model to cars is much like GTA:SA, you can shoot out wheels and that's about it. If you crash into something going fast enough you smash through the windshield (as do any passengers), but I couldn't destroy a window by shooting at it (although you can shoot through them to kill drivers).
AI: Better than GTA, but still not impressive. It's nice seeing cops and gangsters fight, but they don't fight intelligently. Cop gets out of car and shoots at 5 gangsters until he dies. That's not exactly realistic. Also, cops still drive by crime frequently. I'm having a hard time getting any sort of "rating" - I've killed cops, stolen their cars, killed people in front of cops, and as far as I can tell I'm not "wanted" in any way. I'm also annoyed by AI in civilian vehicles - I can stand on the hood of a car and they just drive around crazy. I don't fall off, they drive semi-erratically (but stop for red lights!). Kind of disappointing.
Gameplay: Just like GTA. Do missions, wreck shit up, customize your character. The hiphop influence is heavy, so if that bothers you, don't bother with the game. The controls are better than GTA (free aim instead of lock on), although weapon switching is horrible in my opinion. You are forced to hold down a button and then use the left thumbstick to select a weapon. Time consuming and awkward. There's a variety of weapons, as well as a "kick" button, but none that have wowed me. I don't see weapon stats, so I'm unclear which fictional gun is better than the other. Obviously shotgun > pistol in close range, but which pistol is better, mine or the pimps? You can set waypoints from place to place, which is a double-edged sword for me. It makes getting to and from locations easier, but it also takes away a ton of the challenge of most "omfg, get from here to there in 2 minutes right now" missions. I found the mandatory waypoints took away from my fun, as it felt like it put the game on rails. I prefer GTA's "go in this general direction" icons.
At this point, it's a definite rental for me, unless it has multiplayer. It seems like a game I'd play through until I beat it, or until I got bored. The story is nothing to write home about thus far (a "gang" to scare away other gangs, but your new pseudo "gang" still has gang rules, including being jumped to become a member. Okay...), and the gameplay seems to lack all of the cool shit from GTA I miss.
Things that would redeem it for me:
- A totally massive world. The demo area is small and lacks variation.
- Multiplayer.
- Fun side missions, like jumps and shit. The stuff that sold me on GTA (hitting a jump, getting a cinematic angle while listing to Cleft FM) is totally lacking from Saints Row - so i don't feel particularly badass, nor is running around all that much fun.

I went in for severe dehydration due to the stomach flu, and was out 2 hours later. I got a bunch of drugs shot up into me and a liter of saline, but now I'm feeling better. I'm not quite feeling like death, and more just miserable. Now time to get bettter in 16 hours so I can get on a plane tomorrow night to go to MN.

In a very unpredicted move, Camelot have announced that they will not be making any more games for Nintendo systems and will not support them. These are the guys behind the Mario sports games (but not basketball, baseball and football) and the RPGs Golden Sun 1 and 2.
I was looking forward to a DS Golden Sun :(

I hope the shitty state of the game prior to the most recent patch hasn't doomed the game entirely. Maybe when ra4 gets updated things will change, but the community needs a huge influx of players to even hold a candle to quake3's former glory.
