"The second new scene in the demo showed a Strider attack a tiny village (or just a shack, really) with a slew of freedom fighters returning the attack via assault rifles. One blast from the Strider destroys the shack, just before a tripod shows up to help with the attack."
Er, what? the strider never blasts anything. The "tripods" don't show up: they are there all along and there first. But maybe they saw a slightly different trailer...
"The final new scene we noticed showed a Vortigaunt fighting a series of the new tripods in a cave. Surrounded by nearly a dozen of the tri-pedal creatures, the Vortigaunt uses some sort of area attack to knock them all away."
New tripods? Uh, no. Those are antlions, and maybe baby antlions. Try again IGN!

Also, maybe we'll finally have a decent showcase for the larger striders. One of the things that impressed me from early HL2 videos were the open battles with striders, where they seemed to be impaling and incinerating people at random. In the game, the cool things they did were mostly event triggers, and they rarely interacted with the NPCs. Maybe they'll have improved AI for this one.

The other is that the light from the Vort in the cave scene seems to cast THROUGH the antlions: are they partially transparent now? Or are those larvae or something?

"[...] it is still recorded in the legacy renderer - the old lighting, the old landscape rendering, and so on."
So, the TF2 trailer was done with the new Source renderer? Certainly looked like it. If so... then I can't wait to see Ep2 with the new one :0
