Team Fortress 2...It's Alive, Alive!
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 13, 2006 2:54pm PDTFrom GameSpot's coverage of an EA press conference going on right now comes word that Valve's Team Fortress 2 is still alive, amazingly enough. It's not quite the same game as we saw years ago though:
TEAM FORTRESS 2. WHERE DID THIS COME FROM? Hey, they're still making it! It's got a totally exaggerated, crazy art style now. Looks a little like Spy vs. Spy or No One Lives Forever, kind of a '60s spy feel. It's going to be the included multiplayer mode in Episode 2! Class-based, etc. You know the drill. Great news for shooter fansUpdate: Just got a call from Remo at the show and there are a couple more bits of info from Valve:
- Episode 2 will also include an experimental game called Portal which is a bit more puzzle oriented. Similar to the portal tech seen in Prey but of course a bit more advanced - The Xbox360 and PS3 releases will come out on the same day as Episode2 for the PC. The 360 and PS3 versions will be HL2 + Ep1 + Ep2 but will not include TF2 and Portal.

Then without noting the change, you change the info and say the 360 and PS3 WILL have Portal and TF2. You get corrected and requoted on other sites. Now you change back. It's like watching a tennis match and a sign you shouldn't be referenced as a reliable source.
At least have the courtesy to admit a mistake instead of leaving the time up there from 4 o'clock yesterday like nothing happened overnight.

I think the hardcore TFC players may opt for www.fortress-forever.com though.

More importantly, when TF2 does ship, what will will compare DNF to?

Ive only been waiting for this game since they first announced it way back when.
Team Fortress IMO, is the best mod evar.
So many fond memories of the original and TFC... drool factor is out of control, this news made me wet... but there is SO little info, not even a tincy wincy screen shot!

Hmm, something about that "of course" in there rubs me the wrong way.

Since 6/6/06 we have had the following happen:
- A demo then the full version of Prey Released
- Team Fortress 2 officially unvealed with release pending
- A large Asteroid Flyby of the planet
- Failed but attempted long range missle testing by an unstable nation with nuclear capability
- And the potential for a full scale war involving Israel building up quickly in the Middle East.
The signs are all there....all we need now is an announcement regarding the official release of Duke Nukem Forever and the apocolypse is surely upon us.
On a side note, considering Prey had some re-imagining upon release, TF2 even more, I fully expect DNF to be released as an educational cooking game detailing how to cook intricate cullinary delights via the microwave.

In this day and age, why the HELL do publishers still hold private press events to unveil new products and not release any information to the general public? I mean, honestly, what does anybody gain by EA giving Gamespot a private demo? Gamespot employees sure as hell aren't going to be buying the game.
Sure, I can see the value in showing it off so Gamespot can come back and write a nice preview story, but not releasing any media to go with that? WTF? At least give us screenshots or a teaser trailer for crying out loud. A few ambiguous sentences tell us absolutely nothing. I'm frankly more annoyed than excited.
We have "the Internet" now, you may not have heard of it EA :(

Remember how multiplayer for it was basically dead? It was buggy as hell, there was no mod SDK, and everyone was pissed that they just turned TF2 into a stand-alone product?
Then they came out w/ TFC (initially just to tide the masses over till TF2) and it was like a rebirth for the whole engine's multiplayer. Shit got stable, mod SDK was released, and once again 2fort was full of snipers. Life was good.
Hopefully this move will provide a similar boost for the, IMO, failed HL2 multiplayer & mod scene.

TF2 will likely be fairly grounded in realism, as video games go, realistic player movement and physics, but have you ever seen anyone play TFC? They never touch the ground. It's all rocketjumping and bunnyhopping worse than CS when the bunnyhopping bug was originally found combined with Rocket Arena.
The two gameplay models are about as disparate as you can get.

Well, it's a puzzle game using the same portal gun concept, developed starting years ago. And Valve bought these guys out over a YEAR ago to get them taking their concept to the next level professionally. So much for the "they played the Prey demo and copied it!!!" nonsense.
