Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Diary, Delay

In this opening installment, lead game designer Paul 'Locki' Wedgwood writes about the challenges of balancing asymmetrical team-play multiplayer. The diary also mentions a delay for the game (though the game never has carried an official release date, a late 2006 release was expected): "To ensure the quality we want, we've decided to push the release out of 2006 to allow for extended testing, feedback and game balancing."

Create a sandbox mode of play for the competitive crowd “Quake Wars: Battlefield†and make the asymmetrical “assault†game mode for casual pub play, done. The idea of tuning an asymmetrical game for competitive play is nuts, it doesn’t have to be a conquest rip off either, you could have capture points on the map which actually make a difference if defended or not, tech centers, power plants, advanced weapon factories. Instead of just bleeding flag cap points you offer the team who controls the structure small advantages, a slightly bigger rock, scissor or paper.

With a push back of that long, the team must of known for months they weren't going to make a 2006 launch. To miss holiday sales is a big deal, so there must be considerable amounts of work yet to do on the title. Unfortant too, was one of the few PC titles I was looking forward to this year. I can understand from a PR perspective that by keeping a delay announcement under wraps you can keep your title getting coverage as an upcoming title, but still erks me that ship dates are getting pushed around like a 12-year-old red head.

I'm tired of games being delayed ..that "we need time to make this game shine" doesnt fly anymore ..either gives us "when it's done" or nothing at all till you're 100% sure you'll make your target date

On the positive side, it gives some people more time to upgrade their machines. Unfortunately, that segment of the population does not include me.

I'd be shitting my pants after seeing this video if I was making STALKER or DNF. I'm sure they are all very different games, but usually one game comes along and just knocks the bar up a bit higher. God, what kind of crazy increase in quality level must DNF have had to go through over all these years. Boggles the mind. I hope it turns out to be a decent game and isn't DOA being released after things like Crysis.
Still excited about Enemy Territory of course, and I doubt there is any real worry for SD or id, because ET is likely to become the definitive team combat game, but seeings things like Crysis (and HL2 back in 2003/2004) must really put the fear of god into people spending millions on FPS games where graphics are so important.
