So... is the fact that they keep doing free weekends of this thing just an exposition of technology, or a sign that the game didn't sell well?

I'm guessing it didn't sell well, which is an utter shame. It's an awesome game -- my favorite multiplayer shooter at the moment.

The idea that a company is promoting or advertising their product only because its not doing well doesn't make sense. If I had to guess the reason would be the first time they did it they got:

income due to free weekend - cost of free weekend = profit

      So why not?

I think it's just because it's so damn easy, and because it actually works. The last time they did it with DoD (Feb/06), the average number of players more than doubled over the free weekend; after the weekend, the average player base had increased by 40% more or less (which I believe where actually due to people who purchased), and has been stable since then.

So in the end, I think it's a good way of doing a time-limited demo, giving people the taste of the real game, and profiting from it.

I think numbers ought to be smaller this time around, since most people have already had the chance to test DoD though.
