Halo 2, despite of its shortcomings, does a good job with that, and the armor system just adds to this. Then you have completely overdone AI badguys like those in Sin Episodes, whose objective is quite obviously to kill the player a gazillion times until he's lucky enough to survive and get ready for the next quickload spree...
seriously though, I like a lot of what Warren has to say, too bad it's gonna take a while until we're gonna see more of him (and even worse he didn't monitor DX:IW's development more closely and intervened to save it from being console'd so much...)
