Actually it was very smart on their part. Since full 3d only caters to a small niche, it makes no sense to do it. Thankfully! Their is a reason that more games like Homeworld are not being made, simply, they don't sell big numbers.
I rather enjoyed EAW, a bit of a twist on the tired traditional RTS formula out there. A third faction and 40+ new units to are a welcome addition in my book. The expansion sounds fun.
