Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jun 20, 2006 6:00pm PDTSorry about that little bit of down time on the Chicago FileShack server today. It was one of the awesome problems where you dont know what went wrong and a reboot fixes it. Linux can do that too!

Ok so we all hate RIAA / MPAA for their tactics.
They force sweden to shut down The Pirate Bay, which is comprised mostly of illegal torrents as the name suggests. Then the whole internet community comes and backs them up and is happy when they come back.
Everyone is more or less openly advocating stealing now, and is happy with stealing software / movies / music etc. Im not speaking for MPAA or RIAA or whoever, but I dont think people see the hypocracy.

I beat Quake! Huzzah!
Believe it or not, I don't think I ever actually played through the singleplayer from beginning to end until now. It's actually quite a fun little game if you take it in small bites and know not to expect any real story/coherence/resolution.
The 100 MPH movement is exciting. The weapons have punch. The sound effects are cool. And a lot of the levels really remind you that modern shooters, which concentrate so much on detailed and realistic environments, consequently have problems making interesting 3D combat spaces. Quake's half-assed pseudo-Lovecraftian theme takes a complete back seat to the level geometry. Kinda the same thing with the enemy design too.
Anyway, obviously Quake singleplayer has its problems, but it was fun to give it a run-through, and not entirely for nostalgia reasons. Yay.

I told my wife, and she says "You should have put it in the donation box". I'm like WTF!
So I have this $5, I go grocery shopping a couple days later and there are people outside (as there are everyday) looking for donations. This was for breast cancer. Normally I say "sorry no cash" and it's true, but I had this $5. Hey, I'm a Breast fan so they got the $5.
Was it my $5 or not?

I can't fucking wait. Plus the writer who previewed the demo over at FiringSquad said he ran the game on highest settings with a 2.2 P4 and a Geforce 6800. Looking good for my Athlon 3200 and Geforce 6800GT.

For once, Dallas "needed" to stop blaming the officiating and start blaming themselves, if only for the wonders that kind of admission could do for your playing ability. Dallas did not fool me into thinking they were going to pull out some kind of miracle when they came back home, they were going to play exactly the same way they have played in the previous games, they were going to choke when it mattered. I didn't even have to watch the 4th quarter to know they were going to lose (in fact I didn't) you could read it on their faces and in their shots.
All said and done, i think it's easy to see a few simple truths about this series, chief amoung them is that dallas believed their own bs and their own hype, and unfortunetly that was their undoing. Miami and more imporantly D. Wade deserved the championship, and they backed that up with their playing, instead of their mouth.

Looks like they finally got a resolution:
"Tonight, the NYPD picked up Sasha, the girl that either paid for the Sidekick from a cabbie, on the subway, or got it from her mother—their story isn’t quite straight yet."

While I don't like the "next Jordan" label for anyone, he's about as close as you can get. Not Lebron, not Kobe. Those guys are incredible athletes, but Wade is an incredible player. Clutch, takes over games, wants the ball and "grinds" it out. The other night he wasn't shooting well but still ended up with 32+ points by getting to the line. Impressive player. And humble. It'll be fun watching his career.

Would be a nice time saver...
Need to get around to building the wsus box but ive been lazy
Its not the best looking game, and the controls are not the most intricate... (at least not yet, there is a whole tool bar I have yet to use that just sits down there staring at me like Im a retarded fat man chewing on a rubber band) however, its really really fun.
I mean, who doesn't like killing things while riding around in a fully customizable ship. And its more hands on than EVE. You actually fly the ship and aim, rather than point and click.
Anyway, I challenge more of you to give it a try. Remember, its FREE.

My 19" old CRT died. I'm looking to get a wide screen, probably in the 20" range (LCD or CRT doesnt matter to me). I bought a Dell 2005FPW for my work desk and its just too bright (after turning it down all the way).
Any recomendations?

IBM ThinkCentre desktop, P4 3GHz, 4GB ram (4x1GB).
Ram all checks out, and is seated properly (no thanks to IBM's case design...), but only 3GB is recognized by the BIOS (and confirmed in both OS the machine boots, XP and CentOS3). Doesn't seem to be anything in the BIOS I can tweak related to this, and Google's failing me.
Any way to get it to see the full 4GB?

I just got off a conference call with a guy who was a MS, MBA, JD, LLM, MD, PhD
Yeah, you might guess he's a lifelong academic... but that's all good and stuff... you know, whatever. I've done my share of degree whoring, but of course nowhere near that level. It's very impressive and the guy is clearly very smart, but he's also so... I can't put my finger on it.
Nevertheless, that's not what this post is about. This post is about the conference call.
My boss was looking over some of this guy's materials, and he asks the guy, jokingly, if he could "buy a vowel'.
The uncomfortable silence for the next 60 solid seconds where the guy didn't even laugh or, for that matter, acknowledge the statment at all, was so worth it with my boss squirming the whole time and me trying not to laugh.
After the call is over, my boss turns to me and says "Dammit Bean, you're rubbing off on me!"

That's the worst purchase I've ever made. Not only is the little mini-keypad useless, on the whole, but the drivers tend to disagree with any of my joysticks. The end result is that, for example in San Andreas I've got to disable the Saitek's game-related features (this also nukes the volume controls on the main keyboard) just to get San Andreas to recognize my XBox 360 controller.
Total crap.

So where I work, we have 1000+ computers, and 8 or different hardware configurations. Which includes motherboards, memory, peripherals and other sorts of thing. We are currently using ZEN Image to blast the images to the computers that we're working on.
I want to setup a new system where we don't have to sit down at a computer for a day installing and updating windows, office, and all the other piddly applications.
Now, I work at a school district, so money IS an obstical. Can't afford a 30 dollar a seat option. What options are available for my type of situation. (No, we won't switch to Apple just to use Net Restore)
We would also even like to have one standard Windows basic install that we could run from the network, and automatically have the drivers pulled from a server for our different configurations. Anyone have a suggestion for that setup?
Thankies.
