The Ship Sails to Steam
by Chris Remo, Jun 07, 2006 2:05pm PDTValve has been gathering a broad range of titles for its Steam digital distribution service, and today the company announced another addition to the roster. Outerlight Ltd.'s The Ship, a "massively mysterious thriller" which began life as a Half-Life mod and is now in full scale commercial development using Valve's Source engine, will be coming to Steam next month. The Ship puts players into a multiplayer environment set on a 1920s luxury liner, in which they must discreetly hunt down their assigned prey while avoiding being murdered by their own hunters.
Outerlight is a UK-based studio that began as a Half-Life MOD team. Momentum from their MOD work spurred the evolution of a fully funded professional studio. ... "With the inclusion of a player needs system, plus elements of exploration and stealth gameplay, The Ship is very different than other first person titles," said Chris Peck, Outerlight's Managing Director. "We're delighted to debut via Steam, and have plans for expanding upon The Ship's unique multiplayer gaming with updates and new content after launch."More information about The Ship is available on the official website. The E3 2006 trailer is up on FileShack. The Ship will also see a retail release this September in the UK and Europe, and in January 2007 in the United States.

Hmmm....Hitman on a ship...not a bad idea...
So, for example, the game logic would be different then that of a standard adventure game. It wouldn’t be like “You found the countesses brooch in the bedroom of the debutant, so now there’s a new dialogue branch in which you can ask the debutant about the brooch†sort of thing. The player instead would have to figure these crucial things on his own, and come upon asking the character about it himself – so instead of the option just being available from there on, the player would have a special text box in which he could type keywords into, to ask these plot-advancing questions of different characters. So for example I go to the debutant and instead of just clicking on the “HEY HOW ABOUT THIS HERE BROOCH†option in the list of choices I type in “brooch bedroom†into this little box, and the game knows what I want to ask.

It was pretty fun, but players who just ran around shooting everybody kinda ruined it, if I remember correctly. Also it was pretty buggy.

I wish I could find a PC version of that game; remake, port, whatever. I've looked. No luck ;(
