CDV Drops StarForce
by Chris Remo, May 26, 2006 3:00pm PDTFollowing last month's news that Ubisoft would be dropping the highly controversial StarForce piracy protection software, it looks like others StarForce clients are reconsidering their positions as well. This week, strategy-oriented developer CDV announced that it too is dropping StarForce, opting to transition over to the lesser known (but also less notorious) TAGES copy protection software.
"We believe that TAGES will provide a sensible balance between protecting CDV's intellectual property rights against piracy, while at the same time minimizing the restrictions experienced by legitimate owners of our products," explained CDV's Chief Technology Officer, Teut Weidemann. As reasoning for the move, CDV cited, quite simply, "consumer demand."

I can only hope more companies follows suit and that other copy protection companies make sure they don't go down the same path as StarForce.
