by Steve Gibson, May 09, 2006 10:23am PDTYup, so what would E3 be without some monumental struggles to get things working and online etc? This year the new hotness seems to have been laptop troubles as Maarten brought the wrong cord for his to charge and mine just decided to stop working for a day. Throw in some kickass connectivity problems for the HD video importing and we've got a winner! Not to mention the hotel net connection not working but that's kind of expected these days. We seem to have about gotten things settled now though look for some HD footage later today/tonight. As a bonus.. toughest movie quote ever! Movie: Ok.

I look at that $500-600 tag and I just can't think they expect to sell a lot of units that way. Even allowing for having the highest graphics hardware capability (that's the consensus, right?), having Blu-Ray playback, and even acknowledging that no company is immune to the possibility of making bad decisions, I can't see them seriously expecting to keep their market-share lead with a $500-600 console.
So. Maybe there's a little gamesmanship going on here. We know from previous console launches that demand far exceeds supply. Units fly off of store shelves and go on Ebay for a huge markup. Maybe this price point is just Sony deciding they want a bigger cut of that action. Maybe they're making the smart choice (one that's been proposed in previous discussions of egregious Ebaying during console launches), looking more at the economics of the situation, and deciding to aim closer to the optimum price point.
Who here thinks that Sony is already planning to drop the unit price by $100 or $150 over the first 9 months, once the craze has died down and supply has caught up?

Opened the door to drive in to work today and there were a couple on the floormat. Took it out and shook it off to clean it and noticed quite a few in a spot near a carpet edge. Pulled back the carpet... bazing fooking dozens of them. :(
Rolling to the carwash to suck em out as soon as I get a chance. Fun driving in today - every time I felt anything on my skin I was slapping myself and checking for crawlies.
I miss the cleansing nature of intense winters. 6 or more months a year with barely any flying or crawling menaces in sight!

I bought a Toshiba Satellite m100 yesterday. It says it can use up to 128mb of ram for video yet it says in the display properties that its only using 64mb. I can't seem to find an option to change this, in the bios or in xp settings and I can't find nothing on Toshibas support site and google.

126 MB -- HD Resolution
And the best news--the end of the trailer proclaims "This Fall" rather than "When it's Done." Looks like BF2142 is going to be up shit creek! Yay!!!

For me, it isn't about keeping track of sites. The sites I watch cover everything I care about. Firefox + Bookmarks + "Open in Tabs" covers all my site checking day in and day out. However ...
It would be nice to get alerts for a few sites (like tech bargains). It would also be nice to be able to go back and see which stories I clicked on and read. I hate poluting my bookmarks with every interesting news story that I may want to reference again here and elsewhere. Most importantly, I want to find a great RSS client for Windows Mobile 5. Most sites (like the shack) just don't work on WM5. They very well should because all a good site needs to do is detect Pocket IE and change the CSS. Sadly some of this is on PIE for not working with the mobile .css spec, but whatever. A good RSS client for WM5 would make checking sites like passwird, techbargains and the shack a whole hell of a lot easier.

Highlights:
-Only 4 character classes, but you can customize your loadout, ala Tribes (essentially making 1500 different possible "classes")
-New game mode--no more musical chairs!
-More insentive to join squads--apparently squads now share points like a group in an MMO (pretty good idea)
-The vehicles are easier to control, BUT they have been nerfed (we'll see if that works. Then again, anything is better than the current BF2 vehicle situation)
-The producer claims that the guns are more satisfying to shoot now. (Good, because the random ass "aiming" in BF2 pisses me off. Bring back the BF1942 arcade action!)
I'm still not a big fan of the BF2 engine, but maybe they'll polish it up a little for this one, maybe?

Please read in reply the advice that a guy from work is giving me and let me know if this is true or not. He is very fit and in great shape, so I assume that he knows what he is talking about. He is putting me on a diet and he has created a pimp excel spread sheet that breaks down a ton of food. If stoo foo was up I would upload it to their file system, but they are BROKER*D so I can't.

What are the advantages of powder coating over getting stuff painted? Restoring my motorcycle and it is time to get it professionally painted but I don't know much about powder coating, I don't think I've ever even touched or been close to any metal that has been powder coated. Does it usually cost more/less?
Do you think the new one will be more intuitive to use for first timers?

Lap the competition with truly next-generation features. Made possible by the power of Xbox 360, “Forza Motorsport 2†burns rubber at 60 fps with 4x full-screen anti-aliasing, motion blur, and high-dynamic-range lighting in crisp 720p high-definition glory. And you can feel every nuance of your car and the road thanks to support for the official Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel.
I'm hoping that they're showing the game on the show floor somewhere, and that will get some actual gameplay videos soon.
60FPS + a kick ass racing wheel = Awesome!

There is no rumble feature in the PS3 controller AT ALL? Not just in some games, but they removed the Hardware from the controller? Is this because of the lawsuit or something or have they just decided not to do it?
In any case, that's just retarded.

I'll be damned if Viva Pinata isn't one of the best things on there. It looks like great simple fun and it looks beautiful to boot. Kind of dungeon keeper but without the fighting and with fluffy monsters e.g. you build your little garden and it attracts the animals based on what you put in it.
On top of that all the Pinatas that you get are taged with your personal logo and can be named these are kept when they're traded too. So you might even end up with someone trading your own pinata back to you.
I want this game. It's just so cute. where do i go to hand in my man card?

Pretty fucking sweet. This plays a little like how I imagine Gears of War playing. It looks very, very nice. The bloom is used to fantastic effect, especially since the environment is all snow. I was damn impressed when I dodged (duck + action or maybe duck + jump) behind a wall and turned to look into the sun, and was basically snowblind. Everything was a sheen of white, so I had to totally rethink my angle of attack. The explosions are fantastic. They look very good, then throw you around, and they're fun. Tons of shit explodes. Most of it makes no sense. Aloha, dognose.
The guns have a nice variety, and the mech-thing is super awesome. Definitely shades of Aliens, fear my AT-AT skills, yo. You can keep on picking up rounds from dropped weapons, you don't have to swap out a machine gun with 70 rounds for a machine gun with 300 rounds. There is an upper limit to ammo you can carry. I highly recommend a rifle/shotgun combo for at least a little while, as it is gore ahoy! The energy rifle has a neat ability to charge up, and the rocket launcher makes things go boom. <3
The "anchor" grappling hook has a short range but is very useful. You also get a physics-defying "boost" once you latch onto an item, so it's great for jumping obstacles. Unfortunately, it also highlights how linear the levels are, as I managed to hit an "invisible wall" a few times that really made me sad. =( I haven't managed to beat the pirate level yet, but the bug level was not only fantastic (with a good mix of environs), but it even had an old-school boss fight at the end. Totally unexpected, and a lot of fun. I had forgotten how nice an intense boss fight can be on occasion. I will say that I would like to see some better AI in the human opponents. They "forget" where you were very quickly, and they're very slow to line up their shots and fire at you. I don't want uber-bots, but I shouldn't be able to come around a corner and gun down 5 guys before any of them fire a shot. At least, not with my crappy aim, am I right TFO?
I definitely recommend checking it out, as I was very impressed overall. I have no idea what the story is, as things seem post-apoc and I was shooting humans and bugs both, but whatever. And, especially since it's an E3 demo, I'm assuming many of my complaints will be addressed.
This game just jumped onto my radar!
