Sweeney on Hardware

by Steve Gibson, Jan 26, 2000 7:11pm PST
Related Topics – NVidia

Your evening interview of the day, Tim Sweeney chats it up with the guys at 3DGPU on a number of topics, but mostly focusing on the 3D hardware industry. Guess what piece of hardware Tim is most looking forward to? A console:

The Playstation2. It will completely up the ante in the graphics race, and be something that PC gamers will drool over. The big question now is whether NVidia and 3dfx can match it -- not so much in the paper specs, but in performance with actual shipping games.
Oh yeah, what the hell are you guys doing not voting for Nikki Cox in the new poll!?!? Hello?! (o) (o) anyone? update Jack - Oh, surprise surprise, Nikki Cox has pulled ahead of Alyssa... Man, maybe next poll should be "If Steve thought jumping off a cliff would be cool, would ya?" :-)

  • Baron_Calamity} The same here but out of those 100 PC games I really like only 10 but I like all 10 that I bought for my consoles.

I don\'t see any revolutionary imrprovements of the gameplay on PC. It all the same old. Most of them just mission packs to Quake or Warcraft.

I want something new and when I look at games like Bouncer, Munch\'s Oddysee, Schemue I start drooling those games will provide me with experinces like none other game has ever (At least it looks like it).
And now that consoles become so powerful I\'m almost certain they will.

  • I haven\'t told anyone this before, but, I can see the future.

Everyone and their monkey will buy a PSX 2. Play generic fighting game #46, and then be thrown in the closet as pc games return to their PCs within 6 months.

Sure the PSX2 looks good now, however after everyone gets their console fix for the year, the PC will be rolling out their 3rd or 4th generation consumer cards with T&L. Geforce looks like a bust but the first generation of everything looks weak.

Console wise, I see the PSX2 not becoming the end all be all to gaming and the Dreamcast actually puting up a good fight.
