The 3D Realms website has been updated with a new Prey development diary. This installment offers the latest changelog, as well as a guest update by Nick Murray. Murray, producer of the "Bite Me! Music inspired by Prey" compilation album for DirectSong.com, talks about the song the punk band MXPX created for the game.

        For the record, I'm not a big fan of exclusive content, at all.

        Just so you guys know why that happens....there are these little hidden tracking systems and numbers that both sites have for all games on the site. These magic numbers track hits and visits and interst in a game, and how many people have them on wishlists and all of that stuff.

        Retail game buyers (as well as publishers) have access to these numbers and the numbers basically tell them how interested they should be in a game. It's their one stop place for "should I buy lots of this game for our customers" or "I should take less of this game because game's X, Y and Z have a higher number".

        As a result, the publishers put a lot of weight into these numbers, and that's why you tend to see lots of exclusive content on those sites.

        It's all very annoying.

        So there you go. A peek inside the game industry. There are more of these types of things than you'd ever care to know about :)
