We Are All 8-Bit

Yesterday was the official first day of this year's "I Am 8-Bit" game-centric art exhibit at Gallery Nineteen Eight Eight in Los Angeles, and judging from the photos that have surfaced around the internet of that first day and the opening reception the night prior, there were many really great pieces on display. IGN has some short coverage as well as the ten finalists in a special competition to get artwork featured in I Am 8-Bit. Somebody has a public photo gallery filled with images from the event. Shacker Serpico74 was in attendance, and he snapped a few photos as well. There are also galleries courtesy of GameChew and Kotaku, and a short writeup by The Game Chair. The International House of Mojo also has some better quality pictures of three pieces by Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell and Double Fine art director Scott Campbell. From the official site, which also features some very nice full screen wallpaper images:

i am 8-bit is a lot of things.

An annual art show in Los Angeles fueled by hundreds of creative, bold, and sometimes hilarious reinterpretations of 80s gaming bliss. A book (published by Chronicle Books) chock full of said paintings, drawings, and other, more bizarre mediums. A t-shirt label on a hell-bent, relentless mission to cloth gamers in cotton-clad art and stylish videogame nostalgia.

There were some nice touches as well. Guitar Hero (PS2) developer Harmonix showed up with a Capcom-themed version of its hugely popular game, sporting custom playable tracks from Mega Man 2 and Ikari Warriors. Sadly, that version of the game will probably never see its own release.
