Another World aka Out of This World Re-Released
by Chris Remo, Apr 14, 2006 12:57pm PDTYou may recall an early 90s adventure/platformer game entitled Another World, or Out of This World depending on where you lived. With the exception of the sound effects, every aspect of the game from programming to story to art was entirely the work of one man, Eric Chahi, who spent two years finishing his creation. The game uses unique vector-based animations, an entirely new technique for games at the time, which gives Another World a distinctive visual quality even today. Chahi has updated the game with higher resolution backgrounds and re-released it on PC. We've got the shareware up on FileShack (remember shareware?), and the full version is unlockable for 7 Euro (~$8.47). Upon the game's re-release, Chahi gave an interview with French language site Factornews. As a strong believer in preserving the history of the game medium, Chahi deliberately did not change the game too much. Nothing except the visual fidelity has been modified, and it is still possible to set the options to play the game in its original form. Encouragingly, he is currently working on a brand new game design for the first time in eight years. He is assembling a team, and is in preliminary talks with publishers. Interestingly, the new project is a strategy game. In keeping with his general aversion to sequels, it will be unrelated to Another World. (Speaking of sequels, there have been several games sometimes referred to as "sequels" to Another World, but none have had Chahi's involvement.)

I've tried changing my settings with config.exe but I get the same result.
System Specs:
Pentium 4 - 3.06GHz
2.5 GB of Ram
Nvidia 6800 GT version - 6.12.0010.8421
Windows XP Home Edition (service pack 2)

Any help would be hugely appreciated, I've been looking forward to playing all day, :/

Delphine Software was a great company. Good to see Eric Chahi redo this game.
Delphine Software produced Another World, Flashback and Fade to Black. All excellent games. Even Fade to Black with its control system.

Why didn't Chahi use this version for the hi-res mode??

Right after the transaction went through, I got a call on my phone from the fraud prevention line... apparently ringing up a 7 euro charge from a french company triggered their warning sensors.
hehe
Another World will always stand out in my mind as one of the memorable titles of that era.

The extra sound and music added so much :<. Still going to buy but it stucks :<
Eric Chahi released a new build of the game in GBA format last year sometime. (I cant remember where and when, but i still have the ROM)
Its EXTREMELY small, (like 10 mbit!) but if you can find the ROM (maybe on his website) you can load it to a flashcard and play it on your GBA or DS.
Game looks AWESOME on the GBASP, it is also a multilanguage rom. (no japanese though) A great find if you can get it and, have a flashcart for your GBA.
It's just so goddamn hard >:/

Everything from the intro sequence onwards was just fantastic, a real advancement at the time not only in terms of graphics (the vectors made everything seem more "real" and "alive", and the audio, although sparse, was excellent), but storyline.
The environments actually made you FEEL like you had been transported to another world... and what a strange yet fascinating place it was. Subsequent releases on the Sega Genesis, SNES and PC simply could not match the brilliance of the Amiga version, IMO.
