Video Games: A Slippery Slope

You ever get the feeling that video game detractors are just sort of throwing criticisms at the wall, hoping one sticks? Well here's a new one: a Reuters Health report suggests that video games are gateway drugs making their players more likely to smoke marijuana or drink alcohol. Not only that, but they make you paranoid and defensive, as well as raise your blood pressure.

After playing the game, study participants watched a scenario in which a teacher told a class he suspects some students of cheating on a test, and that while he is very disappointed in those who have cheated he is proud of those who did well. The teacher then asks to see "Billy" after class. The study participants were told to imagine themselves as Billy, and asked how likely it was that the teacher was going to accuse them of cheating. Students who'd played Grand Theft Auto were more likely to think they'd be accused of cheating.

Brady urges parents to be aware of what sorts of video games their children are playing. And kids themselves, she adds, should understand that violent games can change the way they think.

The report is the work of Dr. Sonya S. Brady of the University of California, San Francisco, whose research revolves around finding links between stressful life experiences and the development of youth. Generally, habits she examines include things like drug use and careless sexual practices, but now video games join those elite ranks of mind-altering, growth-stunting pasttimes.

  • Why don't we just go back to living in caves...b/c that's pure innocence right there, nothing but you and the cave.

Every step man kind has taken from cave man to modern day man has in one way or another been a sacrifice of something. Let's think about what else in our modern society is destroying us physically or mentally.

    1. processed food

What's the alternative, growing a garden and having your own animal farm?

    2. gas burning vehicles

Ok, good luck doing any sort of intercontinental traveling horseback.

    3. pornos + the internet

Sexual frustration is a better alternative?

    4. violence in movies/games

Animals are violent by nature, just b/c we have bigger brains we're expected to not be? If all we had to watch was the smurfs we'd probably be violent too.

    5. destroying forest land

Yep tress are important, but what if we didn't cut a single one down? We'd probably be living in the trees when we aren't in our caves. Good luck getting running water, a fridge and a stove in a tree fort.

I'm sympathetic to all these issues. But c'mon. All of these in moderation are acceptable parts of all the luxeries of today. Would life as we know it be better without them?
