The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Chat Thread

by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 09, 2006 12:22pm PDT

Looks like the daily threads have almost run their course. It's been a fun run though, going on much longer than I thought it would. But then, the game is so good.

  • Custom Class: Fill your Class Skills with Combat Skills: Destruction, Blade/Blunt/H2H, Marksman, Armorer, Heavy/Light Armor - all other skills can be raised anywhere by repetition (make sure you get a low level spell affecting Self from each school other than Destruction - and Heal only works if you're damaged - I used Protect, Bound Dagger, Detect Life, Starlight/NightEye, Fortify Fatigue(STR would be better))....
Then, your Level Ups will be entirely dependent on Combat XPs, which should keep you more in line with the higher level challenges when you hit them.
If you just make sure to "practice" while wandering thru town/wilderness you can pretty much just "play your game" otherwise....

  • I just beat main and arena quests! This game is very fun, and I thought I'd point out some of the things that made it less frustrating for me all the way through w/o changing difficulty:

dark elf born under the sign of the lord with "uber heal," (negates the fire weakness) got a good goblin staff near skingrad early which helped with shocking hard dudes (damn cannifears), used heavy armor, bunny hopping all over with great speed and jump gained for fleeing oblivion mobs, then finally the Azura's Star with umbra sword helped me at the end along with a few staffs I found.

  • Already put this in latestchatty but eh, whatever:

I just utterly dominated the arena with my level 22 sneaky archer guy. Do people usually find the arena difficult at high levels, like say compared to some of the main quest missions? My marksman, sneak, and illusion are all either in the 90s or over 100, and for just about everybody I didn't even have to move. I could usually drop them with 2-5 shots from the corner I started in. I'd get myself up to 85% chameleon and just hide. Even when my bow was out of enchantments it just took a few extra shots.

Even after finishing everything and fighting the three minotaur lords I had no problem. Those guys flushed me out of hiding but I just ran away and shot them and dropped 'em. But bonus for me since they're monsters they recharge my bow unlike the other humanoid combatants!

On a side note, I finished the main quest line before doing this. Fun. But it played a FMV cinematic at the end and damn do the graphical settings in the cutscenes look like shit! =)

  • After seeing this: http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=11973176 and some of the other replies in the thread I figured we could use a little talk about sigil stones.

    http://oblivion.gamewikis.org/wiki/Sigil_Stone

As the wiki says, sigil stones are found in Oblivion gates. They are used for enchanting items and have two possible effects. One (I think it's the top one) goes on a weapon and the other goes on armor. For example you might get one that says something like '20 Fire Damage on Target/20 Fire Resist'. So if you put it on a weapon you'd get a 20 Fire Damage enchant, if you put it on armor/jewelry you'd get 20 Fire Resist.

To use the sigil stone just click on it. It'll bring up a menu where you choose what item to enchant. If you need/want a magical weapon and have a sigil stone with nice damage on it then choose your weapon. Remember though that weapons use charges so you'll need to recharge it either at Mage Guilds or with soul stones. If you need/want something on your armor then choose an armor piece. Also remember that you need to be Journeyman armorer to repair magic items.

My favorite sigil stone has to be Shield. Enchanting a piece of armor with 20% Shield basically gives it 20 more AC. Remember that the cap is 85 though.

Hope this helps some of you that have been carrying around sigil stones without knowing how to use them.
