i'm still somewhat new to the game, i just got stopped by some thug on the road who wanted to take me monies. but i chose to fight instead and got owned. does running away work??

  Yes it does, but it takes time to get rid of them. Jump over a rock and go around big rocks, trees or even cliffs, that usually does it.

  personally for bandits/ guards i prefer making them chase me into ayelid ruins, so much fun running in going into sneak mdoe hiding and watching them either clear the dungeon for me or die trying.
