I'll be picking this up on release. :D
I was a big fan of Rise of Nations, but I hate low framerates. I'm glad that the performance will apparently get improved in the retail version though. I'll check this game out later...

My only complaint is the lack of a beginner's tutorial to introduce some of the new elements. But since I'm a seasoned RTS gamer, didn't bother me too much. What's in this demo is pure magic. Crazy new creature type stuff never seen in a strategy game. Voices are great too.

In reply. TL;DR: The game has a whole ton of potential, but currently it still needs a lot of work.

i'm not sure where to start, I loved and played the hell out of RoN. Dawn of War and RoN were the 2 best strategy games in years, since the Warcraft/starcraft/ta days.
This game is probally going to be just as great as RoN, but there are some problems.
The game was fast, no slow downs, loading was ridiculously long (computers get faster and faster but loading times get longer, wtf mate?). I was just playing my first game, about an hour into it dominating the enemy my computer locks up, blank screen, I had to turn it off and it wouldn't turn on until I unplugged it for awhile. Thats never happend to me before, over heating?
Theres an imaginary line in my head, Games with too little units/tech/building and games with too much of it are both bad. RoL goes beyond the latter, pisses on it, beats it to death, walks away, beats it some more and spooges all over it and beats it to death again. I can't even comprehend how many upgrades, units, buldings there are... for all sides. I think this is way overboard. Too much tech, upgrades, "unit abilitys", buildings, units, etc.
I see the obvious RoN influence but this game is very very different. I'll probally be buying it.

I didn't get far in the campaign, it was kinda lame off the start, but I played two quick games and I'm blown away. The graphics are IN-FUCKING-CREDIBLE! Granted, I have a high-end system, and it still chugs *cough*, but the art direction and the detail on buildings is just mind blowing.
OK, there is like a million things you can research for buildings, techs and units, and a lot of them are just super cool, not just "+10% hitpoints", although there is a lot of that too. Like a research lab building that you can upgrade to like 8 other awesome buildings. A telescope? A doom cannon? Build a fort, creat a jauggernaut (a badass tank that makes DoW tanks look like toys) and RUN OVER DUDES WHILE SHELLING OTHER DUDES.
Whatever, I didn't even like RoN all that much and didn't think it was deep, I can't believe this demo isn't getting better reactions. That was $.02 from a super jaded gamer who was just impressed...

Ignoring that this build looks like it shouldn't have been released as a demo period, the gameplay is just... not exciting.
*returns to waiting for a GOOD Kohan clone*
So tired of generic rts schlock. Build units. Throw them at each other. Ooh, this type is better against that type. Ooh, they have a special ability each. Look, heroes!
I loved AoE3 but the predemo (I don't mean the second release) didn't do it much justice, in fact I know a lot of players that didn't want to buy AoE3 because of the first predemo.
If you read through my blog you will find I don't always talk up games :D
Thanks and sorry I came off as some poser or w/e

I just wanted to drop in and say a few words :D
The game's performance will be TONs better, this is of course a demo from beta code (as it's coming out nearly 2 months before the game ships). I don't see how anyone can say the game looks bad unless they have low spec machines or haven't played it... the game looks awesome...
IMO the demo for being off of an old build is still miles ahead of most prerelease demos that hit the web... I've played many including BFME2's predemo, EE2's predemo, and AoE3's predemo... RoL's is by far the best playing of them all... though I agree it's a performance hog in this state.
It's only to give a small taste of the game, wait til you see retail... you'll be in heaven, it is IMHO the best RTS of 06, having played most of the RTSs scheduled for release RoL is tops. Only Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War looks as good as RoL but is a completely different subgenre and playstyle.
Thanks!

I thought I had done it all when I clicked my research building building and got another dozen different options. You can turn your facility into a bunker, a super cannon, a mine, statue, factory + couple other choices. You really get overwhelmed quite easily because you really don't know what should you do in different parts of the game but I guess it's something you just have to learn.

I just don't feel like any RTS games recently have been great...there have been a few good ones, and this one looks stunning - should I be excited about this one?
