by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 25, 2006 7:24am PSTSo what happened to the Battlefield 2: Modern Combat demo that was supposed to come out on the marketplace yesterday? Boo. This comparison video is quite nice though. Movie: I'm not a whore. I'm a call-girl. There's a difference, you know

I am running Fedora 4 (I think) with KDE, and am using it to run MythTV (for an HTPC). Occasionally MythTV will crash to desktop.
What I want, is a setup where every X minutes, a check is made to see if the MythTV process is running, and if not, run it.
What should I use to periodically run this script, and how do I make this script?

Well, I'll preface that by saying this: last week when I was on a bike ride, I saw a squirrel come barreling out of the bushes, seemingly for no reason, about 10 yards a head of me. A car was coming the opposite direction from me, and the squirrel (unprovoked) decide to run from the right side of the road, to the left. And then I saw the most amazing thing. I was too far away to be a danger to Harry the Super Squirrel, but the oncoming car posed a bit of a problem for him. Yet, living up to his name, and without altering his speed at all, the car passed over harry between the two front wheels, and he exited between the two right wheels, safely continuing his journey into the woods where I'm assuming he was late for a dinner party or something, and was afraid of getting bitched out by his nagging wife again for not taking their pre-arranged social engagements more seriously and that she wished she had married the squirrel two doors down that she knew when she grew who, who's now a partner at Nuts Nuts & Feldmon.
Anyway, today was less amazing, just more bizarrre. It was a pretty isolated area and it had been raining a bit, so everything was a bit slippery. The road was wooded on both sides. I'm cruising along at like 17-20 mph, with some johnny cash song going through my head, when out of fucking no where, a big fucking squirrel comes out of the trees on the right side of the road like he's a plane trying to get airborne. He gets two or three hops on the ground, before he begins passing the road. This is all in the matter of seconds, so I really don't have much time to think "I wonder what's going to happen, and what I should do to prevent it." I'm working under the assumption this squirrel has never seen a bike before, and didn't know what the fuck to do with it. Instead of a car, where he's had experience with dodging under the wheels at a constant speed, and has judged the vehicles to almost super-squirrel like abilities, a bike only has two wheels, and with the rotating crankarms, has almost nowhere for the squirrel to pass under. Frank the Remedial Squirrel didn't consider the ramifications of such things, and decided to try to pass between both wheels. In retrospect, I think at the time I was beginning to think he was going to make it. I'm not sure what happened then. Either my pedal/crankarm might've hit him, or he might not have accounted for windspeed, and my back wheel hit him. What I can be sure of, is that some part of the bike hit him, but I didn't run over him. He passed between both wheels after making a bounce on the road, and proceeded his pre-arranged flight plan across the rest of the road, seemingly unhurt.
I spent the rest of the ride thinking "man, that's fucked up."

Myspace.com runs on asp.net 2.0.
- MySpace.com is now processing 1.5 Billion page views per day
- MySpace.com handles 2.3 million concurrent users during the day
- MySpace.com’s average server CPU utilization went from 85% to 27% after moving (from another technology) to ASP.NET 2.0
4 of the top 6 sites (MySpace, MSN, Ebay and Hotmail) run on IIS and Windows
Pretty interesting stats considering how most people love to slam anything microsoft related, and consider asp.net / iis to not be a very solid platform for the net.

I just made some flour tortillas, following the basic recipe outlined in The Joy of Cooking:
2 cups bread flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup warm water
They tasted ok, but they really didn't "puff up" and wound up being very stiff, not foldable like you'd expect. I cooked them one by one and adjusted the cooking time for each, and they all came out hard, so I don't think I overcooked them.
Anyone have any ideas where I went wrong?

i've got a couple interviews coming up and inevitably i'll get asked the question, "Why are you leaving your current job? the real reason is because i want more money but that never goes over well(i said that once). someone suggested i say that i've gone as far as i can with my current company but that sounds kinda weak. i like my job now but i feel i could be making more. so, suggestions on how to say "i wanna get paid yo" more tactfully?

Is dropping a 2nd CPU (into a mobo that supports 2, of course) functionally equivalent to having a single dual-core CPU? Or do the dual-core chips have some tricks they play in order to glean SMP improvements out of applications\Windows that don't explicitly support SMP?

More interactive than Progress Quest, but not by much. I'm at the point where smacking the cat with my sword does 1 damage unless I crit. My crit% is at a healthy 38% with 50/99 luck. All the skills are garbage now except Regen, Quicken and Heal.

This isnt really breaking news, and has been mentioned in passing 3 other times, but I thought i would tell you all about Kororaa.
Kororaa is a live linux cd (like kubuntu) with all the funky xgl stuff enabled. That means spinning cubes, swishing, sticking windows, and all of the other funkyness you have seen recently about it. And the best part about it, its a live cd, so you dont even need to install! Just pop the cd in your cd tray and boot up your PC.

You can get it from a torrent here: http://linuxtracker.org/download.php?id=1604&name=Kororaa-Xgl-Live-CD-0.1.torrent
Ive been playing with it on my brothers PC, and the first time i span the cube, I almost wet myself, It really is awesome!

TL;DR: What's a good website with complete CPU recommendations for different budgets, if possible with system benchmarks?
Yes, I know there's a gazillion hardware benchmark sites out there, but I don't want to compare each and every item of a CPU then assemble a frankenstein of a computer. I'm not a hardware guy (geez, this stuff changes too fast) and I don't want to spend one month reading articles about hardware just to buy a computer, so I'm looking for recommendations of good systems that I can then customize for my needs (with more memory or a different video card, for example). I know the Shack used to have something like this like 4 or 5 years ago. Is there anything cool like that on the interweb?
