No scans or anything, just quotes. Explains why my second IDE channel that my cd burner was on appeared to be defective before I bought a new, expensive motherboard to replace it with. Jesus.

The highest circulation PC Game magazine in the US just came out with a SCATHING Star-Force article, where they tested it and found it can and does damage drives. Heres some relevant quotes from the full article;

"..we turned to CGW's own desktop administrator, Nick Kalister, for a full technical of what StarForce can (and can't) do to your PC. "Starforce doesn't diretly trash your drives or your IDE controller channels," he explains. "It can, however cause Windows to step down to programmed input/output [PIO] mode, which could possibly damage some optical drives if they are run in that mode for an extended period of time."

"Sure enough, an extended test using a 4x Memorex DVD-RW drive and a retail copy of Ubisoft's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory proved it, as the drive's burn speed eventually dropped to a paltry 1x - only to return to its original speed once we removed the StarForce program."

"StarForce Technologies, for its part, often takes extreme offense to negative comments... ...When questioned, Zhidkov [SF's PR manager] told us, "The issue on StarForce is obviously sponsored by our competitors or organized crime groups that run CD/DVD piracy [operations]. We are now in close coopreration with [US and Russian officials] investigating the matter and trying to find out who stands behind the boycott campaign."

You can never tell...

So I'm waiting to catch the bus to leave campus yesterday and decide to go take a 45 minute nap on one of the sofas in our union building. People always do it, and I was exhausted from the studying the night before and needed a power nap. I head up there and pass out alone on a sofa. After about 15 minutes I wake up thirsty as a motherfucker and get up to score some aqua. As I do so I notice there's this really cute blonde sitting on the sofa next to mine doing some really elementary math. I'm fairly good at math (I'm getting a minor in it) and tell myself "Talk to her when you get back, help her out and maybe get her number!"

I score my water and head back to the sofas and just nonchalantly say "How's the studying going?" She turns and tells me what she's studying. Pretty soon she's just put the book down, turned herself to face me, and we're having a great conversation. She's a sophomore at my university, smart, cute, wants to work with kids (social worker). And she seems very interested in me. I'm like "fuck, what a score!" As we keep talking she tells me about this dance class she's taking next quarter and writes down the call number for me and says I should take it with her, etc.

I'm on cloud 9 at this point, and we're talking about our cats. She says she has a cat named Orange Julius since he's an orange tabby cat.

Me: "Do you call him OJ for short?"
Her: "No, that would remind me of OJ Simpson."
Me: (jokingly) "So, do you think he did it?"
Her: "I don't really know, I was so young when the trial happened..."
Me "What? I was like in 8th-9th grade when the verdict came through!"
Her "Oh, well - I'm a sophomore here but I do running start. I started college my junior year of HS. I'm 17 and haven't even graduated HS yet."
Me: "Oh................."

She's MOTHERFUCKING 17. SEVENTEEN. I'm ALMOST 24. GOD WTF!!!!!1

You never can tell these days :(

ATTN Shack MONEY Menz!!!

Are there any freeware/opensource personal financing or budget programs out there that aren't total pieces of shit? I've been doing my finances in Excel for the longest time and I'd like to move up to something not so ghetto. I just need something simple and effective for keeping track of my accounts, balances, transactions, etc.

16 Player FIOS Hosting Goodness

Tonight I'll be hosting a 16 player GRAW battle, complete with co-op, CTF, and something awesome which you may have missed last week called "Hamburger Hill". Hamburger Hill is basically a form of king of the hill, except the winning team gets a helicopter. No, theres no white castle at the top of the hill, but its still awesome.

This will be the last weekend before Oblivion comes out, and I presume it might be harder to pull this off next weekend. Be ready to roll by 9PM Eastern. I will send out invites to all of you (my list is filled with shackers). I've been successfully hosting 16 players off my FIOS, and its been incredibly fun.

Any suggestions on modes of play, state them here.

So, I go looking for a new cell phone contract as mine ends next month on the 23rd and I'm moving to dallas. Locally I wasn't serious about buying because I want a dallas number, but I did ask all the important questions. Pretty much I'm finding better deals online though, BUT my biggest issue is that when I ask about a contract less than 2 years everyone at the stores look at me like "Who just let you out of the crazy house?" What if i don't want to sell myself for the next 2 years? You guys got any tips on this?

Many people express disbelief over the use of huge, oversized swords in fantasy games such as Final Fantasy, especially when wielded by non-muscular characters.

It's not quite as unreasonable and fantastic as one might think though. Perhaps these characters simply have extensive training in Bagua, a chinese martial art which offers training in the use of some ridiculously huge weapons.

As you can see, neither of these people are muscle-bound. Both are very old men. I have videos of young women wielding similarly ridiculous swords with ease. So, Cloud probably just knew Bagua. Or his sword was made of tinfoil.

3 or more monitor question:

If you want to attach 3 or more monitors to one pc, how do you do it?

Specifically, i have a dell precision workstation at work, that has 1 PCI-E slot sproting a Nvidia Quadro FX 3400. It has 2 DVI heads on it. If I were going to add another video card, it would need to be PCI. Since the quadro line isn't available in PCI (to my knowledge) would it be best to go with another NVIDIA card to minimize the chances that the drivers from two different vendors would conflict with each other? Or is there an entirely different or better way to go about this?

Any contract web designers in teh house?

I've been contracted to redesign a website for a real estate company. Pretty basic site, probably around 25 pages of text and graphics (which I'll be pulling from the old site). I'm basically just making the site easier to navigate and improving its search engine visibility

Now the guy wants to know a budget...I don't even know what ballpark I should be charging here. I don't want to come off too cheap because it kinda undermines the value of my work, but at the same time I'm not trying to rip anyone off either. Can anyone give me some advice on this?

Want another reason why Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter isn't a fantastic game?

I present this dramatic reenactment from Ubisoft.

So, guys. We've got the clunky controls down pat. A HUD that simultaneously insults the gamer's ability and infuriates him. But we need something else...I know! How about some sections of certain levels that COMPLETE fuck with everything on screen?! We'll call it interference and make it look like static, but it'll make it impossible to see the action screen! Or at least, the 1/5 that isn't covered by the HUD...

Seriously. What the fuck. Two of my favorite levels (Mayday and Guardrail IX) tarnished by this shit. Argh.

so what online radio stations do you guys listen to regularly? I'm looking for anything good, the only kind of music i dont really enjoy is metal (if thats even the right term these days...)

So im trying to hook it up wirelessly, using a compatable adapter, and all i keep getting is the "adapter isnt configured correctly for this DVR".

Holy crap!

It's 5:30 AM here, but I'm wide awake now. About 20 minutes ago, a loud BOOM, woke me up. I got look out the window, and my neighbors house is being raided by by about 20 cops in SWAT team looking gear with machine guns. One of those tank looking armored vehicles was parked down the street. A few minutes later they were hauling several people out of the house in handcuffs. How the SWAT guys are gone, but there are several normal looking cops and plainclothed guys milling around. WTF?

I played Guitar Hero for the first time yesterday. After mangling Smoke on the Water, I started getting the hang of it. Sweet game! :)

Needs more Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and music in general. They should design these sorts of games so the music is stored on seperate discs that you can swap around.
